Wifi network connection but no internet

Post by tim_curry2468 »

Please let me know if I can improve this post in any way. I am not sure why I am not receiving any responses and am ready and willing to make corrections where necessary. Thanks!

VPN connection and browsing used to work on this machine but about 6mo to a year or so ago it stopped. Only now getting back to trying to fix it.
I would like to be able to connect to the internet for browsing, vpn etc.

I would say that it seems as though I can successfully ping 8.8.8.8 and other IP addresses, such as one I looked up for www.netgear.com: 52.222.150.177
I also would say that there seems to be a DNS problem because I cannot successfully ping www.google.com or www.netgear.com
But I do not have a great handle on these terms or the concepts to which they refer.

I say that I can ping IPs because I get things like this:

user@user ~ $ ping 8.8.8.8
PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8) 56 (84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=1 ttl=120 time=49.0 ms
64 bytes from 8.8.8.8: icmp_seq=2 ttl=120 time=50.0 ms
^C
--- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1001ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 49.046/49.557/50.069/0.557 ms

user@user ~ $ ping 52.222.150.177
PING 52.222.150.177 (52.222.150.177) 56 (84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 52.222.150.177: icmp_seq=1 ttl=232 time=173 ms
64 bytes from 52.222.150.177: icmp_seq=2 ttl=232 time=171 ms
^C
--- 52.222.150.177 ping statistics ---
2 packets transmitted, 2 received, 0% packet loss, time 1001ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 171.326/172.244/173.159/0.915 ms

I say that there is maybe a DNS problem because I get things like this:

user@user ~ $ ping www.google.com
ping: unknown host www.google.com

user@user ~ $ ping www.netgear.com
ping: unknown host www.netgear.com

But I also do not really understand the dynamics at play here. Nor do I have much experience with Linux or command line UI.
So I am confused, when i put the IPs into fierfox browser, from it coming back identifying the Domain Name in the address bar instead of the already entered IP, but it has your usual "we're having trouble finding that site" error. So for instance, I put a FB IP address '157.240.20.35' into the browser address bar and upon returning the 'could not find error' it resolved the IP in the address bar to say 'www.facebook.com'. So it seems DNS is working in some way? Or maybe fierfox has its own offline IP resolution and I am just confounding these results?

I also cannot seem to connect to my VPN servers with NordVPN.

Other computers and phones on the network connect to internet without issue. They also connect to VPN.

According to the "how to get help" post, you desire the output of 'inxi -Fxz'. Please excuse errors, I am typing all of this message out bc the problem machine can't connect, thus no post, thus no copy/paste. And on top of this my keyboard on the working computer has an issue with the 'r' key. Apologies in advance!

user@user ~ $ inxi -Fxz

I don't know what happened just now I lost my connection so here I go again.

nordvpn does not have a GUI in linux so you will have to go into terminal ant type the following entry " nordvpn status " without the quotes. If you see that you are connected to a server try to copy and paste ( type the results ) into a post. lets go from there.

Okay thanks!

use@user ~ $ nordvpn status
nordvpn status: command not found

Normally I connect to vpn though the bash shell terminal by going to the directory containing the server names.
Then I use: sudo openvpn 'name of server'
This prompts password for user.
Then NordVPN username.
Then password.
When the internet was out in the past it would come back with 'connection timed out'. And that is what I am getting now.
If you want me to post the command line data just let me know. I opted not to without your instruction because, tediously, I have to type it all out. And at best it is only indicating that it is not connecting. Not why it is not connecting, as far as I know.

The fact that I cannot see websites in firefox browser also indicates that the machine is not connecting to the internet but my network settings applet says that the signal strength is: 'good' and that the speed is 72Mb/s.

I am just not understanding why the browser and VPN are seemingly not connecting since my other machines and smart phones have been working the entire time.. Thanks!

I am having connection issues right now, I will be back. OK we are on vacation and the condo WiFi / Internet is lousy.
Have you checked with your ISP if there are any problems?
Which linux (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint) are you using? Each has their own little pequliarities when connecting to the internet with a browser.

In looking back at some of your comments I noticed you got nothing with the status command, Try the following command sequence.

nordvpn settings

You should be getting something like this:
Protocol: UDP
Kill Switch: disabled
CyberSec: disabled
Obfuscate: disabled
Auto connect: enabled
DNS: disabled
gunter@Gunter-Laptop-1:~$

next type
nordvpn status

Status: Connected
Current server: us2139.nordvpn.com
Country: United States
City: Charlotte
Your new IP: 207.189.2.223
Current protocol: UDP
Transfer: 4.1 GiB received, 129.5 MiB sent
Uptime: 12 hours 35 minutes 23 seconds
gunter@Gunter-Laptop-1:~$

Let me know what you get.
If you have "Auto connect: enabled"
you should be able to access the internet, if not, are you showing a VPN connection?
