I have a dell latitude d430 just updated from 17 to 19 mint. Wifi on 17 worked no trouble but since updated to 19 no wifii looked thru the forum nothing helped.
Wired connection works done all the updates. the other thing the screen has gone darker difficult to see somethings

the screen brightens up when plugged into charger guess its battery

Problem is your wifi card uses intel legacy driver which has been buggy for a long time.
See the thread for discussion of that. Good Luck. If you can't get it going a USB wife stick may be your best bet. But Do your research first not all of them work with linux.

how come in mint 17 wifi worked straight away no problems yet with 19 i get this trouble whats changed

well its fixed I was not happy with the wifi switch so i took it apart and it was off when the switch was on so it works the screen was fn keys for brightness.
i got to go back in the mouse not working next to the keyboard ribbon is a small one which is clamped i have to see if it has come out.

A friend wants a laptop with mint which would be the best make/model 2 or3 years old to use

You should start a separate thread for this question.
But basically most Dell's, Lenovo's, System76 and zareason laptops will work. But do your research as some models may have problems. Usually I don't advise that you get the very latest because Linux kernels and drivers take awhile to catch up with newest hardware.
