I recently installed Mint 19.1 Cinnamon, after yrs of being away from Linux. I have a TP Link wireless adapter, I have the appropriate driver but do not remember how to install it to get my internet going, any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi tslr,
Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum!
I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.
FYI: Here is an example from my computer of this command

Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
I have no internet on that machine to copy and paste
Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
Copy the results to a text editor and put the file on a USB drive to transfer to a computer with internet

Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
Download https://www.dropbox.com/s/lm17d87i3klayrh/8812au.ko put it on the USB and then copy the file to your /home folder, then in terminal
Reboot and then we will download some programs and source code so that it will build for kernel updates
Code: Select all
sudo cp 8812au.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
sudo depmod -a
Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
Is it working? If so do
You should be set
Code: Select all
sudo apt update && sudo apt install git dkms build-essential
git clone https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux.git
cd rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux
sudo make -f Makefile.dkms install
Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
What results for
Code: Select all
lsmod | grep cfg; sudo modprobe -v 8812au
Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
insmod /lib/modules/4.15.0-20-generic/kernel/net/wireless/cfg80211.ko
insmod /lib/modules/4.15.0-20-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8812au.ko
insmod /lib/modules/4.15.0-20-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/8812au.ko
Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
Now do
Just tell me if you get results other than
Code: Select all
iwlist scan
Code: Select all
Interface doesn't support scanning.
Re: need help with usb wireless adapter!
No wonder, that module wasn't patched for your device
Download https://www.dropbox.com/s/iy7m54y3e5q6h2z/rtl8812au.ko and copy it to /home in Mint
Reboot
Download https://www.dropbox.com/s/iy7m54y3e5q6h2z/rtl8812au.ko and copy it to /home in Mint
Code: Select all
sudo cp rtl8812au.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/
