Internet breaks after attempt of big file download [SOLVED]

Post by rotozeev » Wed Jun 05, 2019 7:43 am

Hi all,

I have a problem with wifi internet. OS LinuxMint 19.1 Cinnamon 64, Lenovo G30-50

From time to time my internet connection stops and I have to break and restore w-fi connection to cure it. I noticed that I have a 100% probability to get this effect when I try to download a big backup file from my web-hosting (ISP manager panel). The file is about 2 GB, and download process can stop between 100-900 MB, and when it happens I can not open any other sites (or they are loading very very slow). But! The Google search and Youtube still works perfect and fast! So, this is not a deep protocol problem like MTU (I set it to 1492 like in router settings) or IPv6 (I disabled it). I tried to use Google DNS instead given by provider - the same result. I have access to Google and don't have access to other sites until I turn OFF and turn ON the wi-fi in tray. These problems started when I changed the provider and router. So, I really don't sure is this a problem with linux-mint or this is a problem with provider/router. But if this is a problem with the router why I can cure it by OFF-ON switching my wi-fi connection in network manager in my laptop? May be someone can advise me something, or at least this topic can be useful for people who will discover the same issue of their wi-fi.

This is network manager in normal regime when all sites works:
Image

And this is how looks network manager when all sites don't work (but Google and Youtube still works! with "0%" of wi-fi power!)
Image

But at the same time when I see 0% wi-fi power in opened NM window the power is non-zero when mouse only hovers the Network Manager tray icon:
Image

When I try to donwload other big file (for example, linuxmint iso from this site) all things are OK. But in the any case this is quite strange that (potential) problems on dowloading from one server can cause a problems with internet which affects all other sites.

Code: Select all

OK, try this:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID2.3
(item 2.3)

Furthermore: in the settings of your router, make sure your wireless network is WPA2 Personal with "AES only" (no TKIP). Not only will that optimize your wireless security, but it'll also optimize the stability of your connection.

I made disable hardware encryption/decryption, but I could not find router settings "AES only". So, downloading of the problem file again caused internet problems when google and youtube (and some other sites, I can not find a rule) works well and other doesn't. May be, connection becomes little bit better, because before disabling hardware encryption the problem appears after ~200 MB, or ~600 MB downloaded data, and now it happens after 1.3 GB (the whole file is 1.9 GB).

The command output when internet stopped is the following:

Code: Select all

iwconfig
wlp2s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"Telekom-8ry98Z"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz Access Point: D0:6E:DE:2F:15:0D
          Bit Rate=52 Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=67/70 Signal level=-43 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:5 Invalid misc:13704 Missed beacon:0

enp3s0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.
ping when internet stopped is:

Code: Select all

I could not find router settings "AES only".
You should be able to find that under the settings for Encryption. See this screenshot of my router (click on the image to enlarge it):

It seems not. This is a router from internet company with only basic tunable settings.

OK.... Then try if it helps when you select a fixed channel instead of the automatic "AUTO" channel selection.

It's currently on channel 11 in your screenshot, so it's probably a good idea for you to select channel 11 as fixed channel.

before any changes to router the first solution is unplug the router for 20 seconds, while computer is still running. i have to do that sometimes after using windows10 (dual boot) or because the channel AUTO cycles your connection (Pjotr is correct, don't use AUTO)

install LinSSID https://sourceforge.net/projects/linssi ... nSSID_3.6/ and use it to see what channels are being used around you. i use the channel that has the least connections and the lowest signals. for me that's 11 like in your case

It seems I understand what happens and what to do. I hope it can be useful for readers in the future.

So, the problem was in the router settings. It was turned ON the option "WMM - Wi-Fi Multimedia". When I turned OFF this option and try to download this big file again bingo! File was donwloaded without any problems!

I noticed, that with ON regime the download speed was higher (2-3 MB/s) but with unstable internet, with turned OFF the donwload speed was lower (1-2 MB/s) but with stable connection without internet stopping.
