intermittent wifi [SOLVED]

Post by pedroi » Wed Jun 26, 2019 7:35 am

I've recently installed Mint 19.1 on a Dell Inspiron 15 300 with a Ryzen 5 chip.
I got through installation after advice to add nomodeset to the boot (thanks!) and then updated the kernel to 4.18 (I've also tried 5.0).
It all works great except... the internet just disconnects intermittently, while still showing a signal on the panel icon.
I use the internet on my phone with wifi and this is consistently working fine.
Mint's driver manager says 'no proprietary drivers are in use'
Can anyone advise me what to try?

I would see if disabling wifi power management helps

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
systemctl restart network-manager.service

Thanks for your response Jeremy. I tried pasting the code into terminal, it pastes up to -powersave-on.conf
then starts a new line with [sudo] password for pedro: ************************************************
Am I misunderstanding how to paste in the code?

Just realised this is two separate lines of code! Obvious when you know.
I've discovered iwconfig from the internet and confirmed power management is now turned off.
So I'll see how it goes and report back. Many thanks for the help.

Yesterday I thought this was solved, though there were a few disconnects, but today it's back to disconnecting every 10mins or so.
I've looked at iwconfig and confirmed the power management is still off. My workaround is to click the wireless icon in the panel,
then the network id that I'm using and that seems to bring it back. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Do you use Docker? I just recently had a case with recurrent wifi interruptions and error messages in Chrome, where after disabling the Docker service everything worked again. See also here:

No I don't use Docker. And I use Firefox so it's not Chrome related. But thanks for the post.

Run these 2 commands in terminal and post the termbin URL after the second command is finished

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && chmod +x wireless-info && ./wireless-info
cat wireless-info.txt | nc termbin.com 9999

JeremyB - does the output in termbin give any clues as to what's happening?
Thanks

Can you change the encryption on the router to disable TKIP?

Security on my Virgin Super Hub 2 router is set to WPA Auto. Other options are:
- WPA2-PSK[AES]
- WPA-PSK[TKIP] ...but this is greyed out
- WPA/WPA2 Enterprise
- WEP ...but this is greyed out
- Disable

Channel is set to Auto-Compatibility, with other options:
- Auto-Performance ...I had wondered whether to try this but there's no explanation, except recommending an auto setting to detect least congested channel
- other channels from 36+40 to 136+132

And i have tried turning the router off and on again!

I would use the WPA2 AES option

Thanks Jeremy, I've been trying it and another laptop with MInt 19.1 over the last two days. Wifi is ok on the other laptop, but on this one the problem comes and goes but at worst is still disconnecting every 10mins or so, and I get wifi back by clicking the icon in the panel and clicking on the the wifi ID in the list, this restores it. Did the termbin output show any problems?
I bought the laptop with windows 10 so I think if all else fails I could reinstall w10 and see if wifi is still disconnecting, in which case I can go back to the shop.
Appreciate hearing any thoughts on this. Could it be hardware? Or a poor connection (I saw another post about this). Thanks.

I also ran it while the wifi wasn't working and got the following, if that's any help.
Of course it wouldn't give me a URL. Let me know if there's some way you want to get to see the output.

Results saved in "/home/pedro/wireless-info.txt".

Results also archived in "/home/pedro/wireless-info.tar.gz", as they exceed the 19.5 kB size limit for ".txt" attachments on the Ubuntu Forums.

Code: Select all

cat wireless-info.txt | nc termbin.com 9999
