Wifi not working {SOLVED}

Post by Baldlygo » Mon Jul 01, 2019 7:11 am

Hi - sorry to butt in - I'm on the 3rd day of struggling with the same issue. I ran the RTLwifi_new driver commands as show but did it omitting switching secure boot off. So I would like to install again but it will not let me . I need to uninstall first but no idea how to.
However it may have been installed OK. It did connect for a few minutes browsing but then failed and does not connect again
carol@carol-HP-Notebook:~$ lsmod | grep rtl
btrtl 16384 1 btusb
bluetooth 548864 43 btrtl,btintel,btbcm,bnep,btusb,rfcomm
rtl8723be 98304 0
rtl8723_common 24576 1 rtl8723be
btcoexist 172032 1 rtl8723be
rtl_pci 32768 1 rtl8723be
rtlwifi 98304 3 rtl_pci,rtl8723be,btcoexist
mac80211 778240 3 rtl_pci,rtl8723be,rtlwifi
cfg80211 622592 2 rtlwifi,mac80211
Not sure I can identify the new driver or re-run the antenna selection command

Hi - sorry to butt in -
Mod note:
If you feel the need to say sorry before you do something, that is a pretty reliable sign that you shouldn't do it. I've split your question off into a separate thread, as per the forum rules. Cheers!

If I rerun the install I get
Module rtlwifi-new/0.6 already installed on kernel 4.15.0-54-generic/x86_64
so I don't understand why I don't see rtlwifi-new in the lsmod | grep rtl output list.

I advise to start again with a clean slate:

1. Make sure that Secure Boot is disabled in the BIOS (you might need to set an administrator password in the BIOS first);

2. Re-install Linux Mint 19.1;

3. Try the antenna selection:

(item 2)

4. If that fails (unlikely, but you never know), try the rtlwifi_new driver:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... k.html#ID7

Finally, as an aside: don't hesitate to re-install, when you still have problems after lots of tinkering.... Usually, it's the only sure way (or the quickest way) to have a predictable system again. :wink:

Thanks for the good advice Pjotr
Sadly my time has run out. It took me two days to get dual boot working and I've promised my wife today will be the last. Also my forgetful attempt to install the new driver with secure boot enabled means that win10 no longer works in that mode.

My only hope is to get the wifi working as the notebook is at present. If this fails by 18.00 hrs I have promised to set Grub to Win10 default boot and hand the notebook back to the owner.

A problem is that Mint works so well on my own pcs for years without any troubles I forget all the nitty gritty details that come up at install.

So if I could remove my rtlwifi_new driver and install again then it may just save the day - but I won't hold my breath :wink:

Surprising last minute progress.
I ran modified version of code from this thread - viewtopic.php?t=273382 and the wifi levels increased drastically and I connected without reboot.

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be
sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=1
iwlist scan | egrep -i 'SSID|level'
sudo modprobe -r rtl8723be
sudo modprobe rtl8723be ant_sel=2
iwlist scan | egrep -i 'SSID|level'
However when I rebooted it failed again so I run them again and back they came. I am writting this message over the wifi

So now I only need to know how these settings can be made permanent.

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8723be ant_sel=2" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723be.conf

Thanks very much Pjotr. I'm sure I've tried that before and it didn't work.
Saved at the last moment - my friend can now be enhaunced to Linux Mint.
