[SOLVED] Realtek RTL8812AE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter Driver Not Working!

Post by xtremeelemental » Wed Jul 10, 2019 10:48 pm

I am new to Linux and decided to give Mint 19.1 Cinnamon desktop a shot. However, Tp-link ac1200 PCIe adapter is not functioning properly. The PCIe light indicating that there is power to the adapter, but I am unable to connect to my router with ssid detection or manual configuration. Every so often there is only one SSID that occurs but never mine. Here is most if not all the info that may help:

The card is recognized well, the right driver is (and was) installed, so I think it is an hardware issue, maybe with the antennas. Have you tried to connect them off and reconnect them, if something has gone wrong the first time? Is there a difference between right and left antenna? Or to plug out the whole card and plug it in again. Or, if possible, try another PCI-Slot.

Another thing, which can be tried, although only mentioned in relation with bad internet connections, is to set the power management of the wireless card to "off". I think, it is worth a try, when above mentioned doesn't help. To set the power managment temporarily to "off" for a try use the following command

Code: Select all

iw dev wlan0 set power_save off

HAWR, That was my thinking how it appears the correct drivers are installed and its being detected. now since then I have install WICD and disable Network Manage, switched the antennas, only one PCIe slot (sadly), unseated and reseated the card, and even removed CMOS battery for 30 mintues. No improvement!

I did attempt to add the network on WICD and even though network wasn't found, I checked "wiconfig" and it displayed the network, but no connection detected.

Code: Select all

elemental@elemental-GT5432:~$ iwconfig
enp3s0 no wireless extensions.

wlp4s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX"
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr=2347 B Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

lo no wireless extensions.
now I did replace the essid in the field above with "X" but reguardless maybe an improvement?

I did try to disable power management and this was the output:

Code: Select all

elemental@elemental-GT5432:~$ iw dev wlp4s0 set power_save off
command failed: Operation not permitted (-1)

I was able to disable power management with this code:

Code: Select all

sudo iwconfig wlp4s0 power off
No Improvement and when i reboot, power management was on and I disable again with no improvement!

I'm sorry, but I think, there is a very high chance, that it is a hardware defect. Can you test it on another computer (regardless if Linux or Windows)? Do you have warranty on the card, so you can get a another one in replacement?

I was afraid of that, I do have warranty but I think I'm going to get a USB WiFi. Any Suggestion?

I'm sure I may need to "Solve" this post and/or may need to start a new post.

I'm not familiar with usb wifi adapters (cause I never needed one yet :D ), but here are some websites with suggestions for linux-recommended adapters:

https://willhaley.com/blog/linux-usb-wifi/

https://www.wirelesshack.org/top-linux- ... pters.html

https://www.amazon.com/customerpicks/Be ... ginal=true

Maybe because of your warranty you can exchange your PCI-card for an usb adapter you have found above? I think it's worth a question :)

You're welcome. Maybe you can report the result here. A well working wifi adapter is certainly interesting for many, especially if you have found an ac-adapter. Good luck! :)

****Follow up****
I uninstalled Wicd and enable Network Manager and purchase Panda Wireless: PAU09. It's a plug and play which worked right out of the box. sadly its not AC, but for what I need, This worked perfectly. Good Luck!
