Wifi device not ready after disconnect

Post by nouser » Tue Jul 23, 2019 5:02 pm

I use a DELL 7450 Laptop with internal wifi adapter.

Code: Select all

lshw -C network

 *-network
       description: Wireless interface
       product: Wireless 7265
       vendor: Intel Corporation
       physical id: 0
       bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0
       logical name: wlp2s0
       version: 59
       serial: xxxxxx
       width: 64 bits
       clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless
       configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=4.15.0-54-generic firmware=29.1044073957.0 latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11
       resources: irq:50 memory:f7000000-f7001fff

After booting the wifi connects automatically to the last used network and everything works perfectly

When I now manually disconnect using MATE network manager and want to reconnect the wifi adapter is disabled. It shows as "device not ready" in the panel menu.

iwconfig shows wifi active:

Code: Select all

iwconfig

wlp2s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=22 dBm
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
So far the only way to recover was to reboot the system.

Update:

Code: Select all

abcd@E7450:~$ sudo service network-manager stop
abcd@E7450:~$ sudo ifconfig wlp2s0 up
abcd@E7450:~$ sudo service network-manager start
successfully restarts the device. However, I am now connected again to my default network.

How can I prevent the network manager from killing my device when i merely disconnect from the network?

(Same thing happens btw when I just connect to a different network without disconnecting from the default network first).

I would do

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/*
That keeps Network Manager from enabling wifi power management

I already did this since I was suspcious myself about the power management causing the issue.

You can see in the iwconf output that powermanagement is already turned off when you check closely. That it shows "Tx-Power=22 dBm" indicates the wifi is actually up and running.

Just installed

https://github.com/id01/nm-applet-fix

which seems to fix the problem.
