No wi-fi connections shown on Dell 6430 with Mint 18.1

Post by df1995 » Sat Jul 27, 2019 6:36 pm

I purchased a used Dell Latitude 6430 with Mint 18.1 preinstalled. NO wi-fi connections appear on "network manager". I want to use the system on PUBLIC WiFi networks like Starbucks. I have no home internet and no access to a wired connection.

Is the issue lack of drivers? If I download the Mint USB will the drivers be there? System says cannot install drivers because no internet connect, dvd, or usb stick.

Hello df1995,

here is another thread related to try connection via Starbucks: viewtopic.php?f=49&t=298373&p=1662963&h ... s#p1662963.

There is no real solution until now, but maybe it helps you a little bit. Is the wireless switch of your laptop on? Is Secure boot disabled?

It also can be a driver problem. If the upper hints bring no success, please give us an overview with the output of the following terminal-commands:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
general overview

Code: Select all

iwconfig
wifi related view

Code: Select all

rfkill list all
shows possible soft or hard block

Code: Select all

lspci
Overview of PCI devices (if you have a wireless related PCI device)

Code: Select all

lsusb
Overview of USB devices (if you have a wireless relatedt USB device)

Unfortunately I can't port the terminal results to here yet but findings were

"no wireless exensions"

dell wifi wireless LAN: Soft locked NO. Hard blocked YES

Wireless switch ON

Secure boot DISABLED on boot menu

I have no clue what the terminal results mean.

No WiFi? I've just had the same problem with a Toshiba Tecra M10. We got back from a short holiday where WiFi worked well and then nothing worked at home. As laptops were available (our Shed had 8 donated to it) I swapped disks and the other machine worked with the "faulty" machine's disk - not software.

Then a bit of digging. Oh...!!! There is a black switch on the black side of the laptop that allows switching off the WiFi. OK, what machine do you have? A Dell and there is a nice website with pictures and the bottom picture shows the side of the laptop with a WiFi switch.

Is your WiFi switch really ON? Does it need flicking a bit?

You should take a look into the manual, if there is a special key combination (with FN-key), with which wifi can be enabled. Or have a look into the BIOS, is there is something related to wifi.

Thanks. Wireless switch is ON. BIOS set for Wireless device ENABLE.

So my conclusion is that the fault lies not in the hardware but perhaps in the Mint installation. If I don't get a better suggestion by tonight, I'll just install v19.1 over this.

Thanks for those who offered help!

Fellow geeks,
I installed 19.1 taking care to install wifi drivers. No soap.

However, exploring the BIOS I found I had a Broadcom wifi adapter.

There's another discussion where this issue is addressed and possibly solved LINUX 19 BROADCOM WIFI ISSUE so I'll try that next.

I appreciate the suggestion. I just downloaded 18.1 again on my phone, but it on a USB stick and re-installed it on my Dell 6420. I bought the Dell with Mint pre-installed but the Broadcom driver needed to be installed separately. It wasn't. Re-installing gave me the opportunity.

Solved by by making own USB installation stick, reinstalling Mint 18.1 and checking device drivers. Advised to Install BRODCOM driver. i did and problem solved.
