ASUS USB-AC56 Adapter and Cinnamon 19.1

Post by jameswjd » Tue Aug 13, 2019 9:22 am

Good Day. I am in the process of moving my desktop system from Windows 7 to Cinnamon 19.1 (currently testing a Live version on my system before fully installing). I am currently using the ASUS USB-AC56 Dual-Band Wireless Adapter. It works great for Windows 7, but my Live Version of Cinnamon 19.1 does not recognize it. The ASUS website says it will not function with it at all.

Anyone know if this particular ASUS can be made to work with Cinnamon 19.1? Or, do I need to purchase one of the Panda wireless adapters recommended by various users for Linux use?

*My computer knowledge is lower-end of acceptable, so please keep that in mind. Minor tweaks I can possibly make, but my skills are rather limited in this arena.

Thanks in advance for your help.

James

I am not familiar with the device but there is a driver available in the repositories, which you can install with this terminal command, provided you can get an Internet connection in another way:

Code: Select all

apt install rtl8812au-dkms
If you cannot get a connection, boot the live environment from a machine that can and run

Code: Select all

apt download rtl8812au-dkms
then take the created file to the machine that needs it, extract it there and run the install script within.

After it's installed, load the driver like this:

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe 8812au
to see if it works (or just reboot). A quick google search mentioned that it might not actually work, in that case the recommendation was to use this one instead (after removing the other one). We can talk you through it if needed:

Greatly appreciate your reply. However, I'm not sure my minimal tech expertise will be sufficient to successfully lead me through your suggestions! Would I just be better off buying a new Panda PAU 09 Dual-Band Adapter? I understand from reviewing previous posts that it works out of the box with Mint. If these comments are correct (and I am assuming they are), then maybe this is the safer approach for someone like me.

Trust me, I am all for saving the money. I'm just not convinced I possess the skill to accomplish this task.

Do you happen to know if what I have read regarding this particular Panda adapter working well with Cinnamon is correct?

Thanks.

Up to you. The PAU09 should have a driver in the kernel, yes.
