Can't stay logged in to forums (Solved)

Post by Larry78723 » Mon Aug 19, 2019 11:59 am

I'm having a problem staying logged in on various forums even though I've checked the "remember me" box (including this board) when I close the cover on my laptop. It doesn't matter if the laptop is closed for 5 minutes or 5 hours. The following info is provided:

That'll not be a hardware issue: being logged in on a forum inside a browser means having a certain cookie active. Perhaps you have a corrupt cookie store. I could sort of imagine a suspending laptop, suspending network connectivity, to cause e.g Firefox to drop current state only to reload it on resume -- which if the login cookie wasn't originally correctly saved would mean no longer being logged in.

I'd in Firefox try Edit -> Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Clear Data. Seems you'd personally also not want to "delete cookies and site data when Firefox is closed" if that's selected now. Be of course aware that after clearing data, you'll have to re-provide data to many sites...

If not Firefox I'm sure you'll be able to find the for your preferred browser similar option; you'd be looking for some method of rebuilding the cookie database.

Thanks rene, that worked. I'm using Chromium and the way to do it is Settings, Advanced, Privacy and Security, Clear browsing data.

EDIT: Well, I thought it was fixed but apparently it wasn't. Still having the same problem.

being logged into a forum requires remembering cookies. this all depends how you set up your browser. i block all cookies and third party cookies and allow for exceptions like here at https://forums.linuxmint.com . what are your cookie settings?

Cookie settings are "important". (Sorry, could not resist.)

You have selected to clear (among other data) cookies on exit; while I take it that's not your problem, that you get logged out even without closing the browser if you suspend, I'd still try and see if there's a difference if you in fact switch that off; chromium could supposedly have a somewhat private definition of "exit".

The third-party cookies which you do not accept should not matter. If first paragraph does not show anything: you supposedly temporarily thought clearing cookies worked for a reason so I'd next try closing chromium and manually removing and and all of its settings and cache. I believe that means rm -rf ~/.{config,cache}/chromium but don't use chromium (anymore) myself so make sure. Of course, be again prepared for this destroying any and all custom settings you may have in place, bookmarks, what have you. But the idea is to have the thing build its data from scratch again.

rene, I've closed down Chromium and deleted both ~/cache/chromium and ~/config/chromium. I've restarted Chromium and will report on status in the morning.

Hopefully ~/.cache/chromium and ~/.config/chromium, i.e., with the initial dots, but I'll assume so...

in chrome/chromium address bar paste this to get the cookies that are belong to your session
chrome://settings/content/cookies
scroll down to Allow
also click the cookie icon > Show cookies and other site data... > and see what's in Allowed and Blocked.
Image

if you see mint in the blocked area click on it and Allow
Image

also in chrome/chromium menu > hostory > history > clear browsing data > advanced > all time > select everything EXCEPT for Site Settings <<< these are your cookie exception settings

Hey folks, it didn't work in Chromium so I installed Chrome and will try trytip's suggestion on it. I've never been able to get used to Firefox, it seems so awkward to me. I wouldn't have any idea how to move all my passwords over from Chrome/Chromium (sync'd to Google).

OOOPS didn't see this. you have chromium delete mint cookies as your browser exits. remove it from the exception list.

Still no solution... :(

I tried trytip's solution but it's not working. Closed laptop for an hour and was logged out.

Booted up this morning and there's been a change in behavior. If I have tabs open for 4 sub-forums on this site, whichever tab was active when I closed the lid remains logged in while the rest are logged out when I refresh the tab. Seems strange that 3 tabs get logged out while one remains logged in, either I'm logged into the site or I'm not. If I click on login, it picks up that I'm logged in on the tab that was active when I closed the lid.

Can someone explain this behavior?

Not really. It's got the hallmarks of a browser problem. I would recommend testing with a different browser.
