[SOLVED] Wifi on HP Notebook will not switch on

Hi all,

I'm still a Linux novice and, of course, I have a problem I need help with. It's a wifi problem again and the same as last time, 2 years ago, insomuch as when I open the Network Manager and click on the 'Wireless' switch it will not switch on and stay on. Very briefly it shows the SSID and the signal strength, so it recognises internet connections, but the switch turns off almost immediately.

Here's some background info: I'm still on LM18.1 Cinnamon (dual booted with Win 10) on to a HP 17-y054na notebook (64bit AMD quad core) that has an internal PCI Broadcom BCM43142 wireless card. Wifi and wired work ok under Win 10 but under LM only wired. Previously, GeremyB solved it by giving me the command 'echo "blacklist acer-wmi" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf' to prevent an Acer-wireless module being automatically loaded by the kernel. Now, tbh, I don't use wifi on the HP much so I hadn't noticed that the problem had resurfaced until just now so I guessed that updating the kernel a couple times in the past has reset the block. I've rerun JeremyB's command but it's no longer effective for some reason.

I've run some commands taken from another thread that may be of help to you:

Running 'rfkill list' outputs:

Code: Select all

	Hard blocked: no

Well, Pjotr, that fixed it but not for the script contained in the link but for reminding me that I should have rebooted my computer after running JeremyB's command. A very schoolboy error indeed.

Many thanks,
