Ethernet (LAN) emulation over a USB-WLAN device seems broken

Post by JeWu » Fri Sep 06, 2019 7:16 am

Upgraded from Mint 18.3 Cinnamon to Mint 19.1 Cinnamon two weeks ago.
It all went smoothly but I found two broken things just yesterday.
Not sure, if it's really a problem of the upgrade, though.

PROBLEM

Ethernet (LAN) emulation over a USB-WLAN device seems broken :
the connection (used to be listed as ETHERNET xx right at the top when clicked on the taskbar networking icon) therefor autoconnect also not working.
I am using a Huawei WLAN mini router. It used to get recognized as a LAN connection, when plugged into a USB port. I then switched off WLAN at the network-manager and used the emulated LAN connection only.

Does anybody know, if the latest kernel upgrade could be the issue here?
Maybe, I have to install some drivers (though it used to run by default under Mint 18.3)?
The drivers setup GUI reports no proprietary drivers are used and displays an empty window (not even Intel drivers shown, as it used to under 18.3)

system: linuxmint-19.1
arch: x86_64
kernels: 5.0.0-25-generic / 5.0.0-20-generic (tested both)
HW platform: FUJITSU LIFEBOOK A556 i5 6200u 16 GB RAM

PROBLEM 2:
>cinnamon-settings
returns several FileNotFoundError messages and fails.
GUI not opening anymore.
