Network Manager not showing or managing wifi

Hi there guys - I'm new to Linux Mint, but not new to Linux/UNIX in general, but I'm stumped by this one.

I had a heck of a time getting my add-on USB wireless dongle working on my new (to me) HP workstation. As a result of spending a bunch of time here in the Linux Mint forums, I found problems and solutions pretty similar to mine, with solution descriptions that allowed me to download source code, "make" and "install" and "modprobe" my adapter to "wake it up" and it came to life(Excellent!).
I then followed other solutions to configure a new connection using Network Manager, and preferences and succeeded in getting my cheap little USB dongle talking on my home network - all good..
Here's the problem: I noticed that the systray icon wasn't showing anything to do with wifi, in fact it didn't list anything having to do with wifi connection at all even though my link was up and working and browsing the web just fine. I tried a few things I saw mentioned here in the forums, like removing the Cinnamon" network manager, but nothing I tried seemed to affect the problem. I'm unsure of exactly how the wifi connection is being "managed" (it shows "managed" in iwconfig, and it shows as "UP" in ifconfig -a.

Is there something I can do to "fix" network manager so that it shows my wifi link, and allows switching SSID's??

Does that machine have any internal wifi card? if it does try disabling it see if Network Manager picks up the usb one.
If not you may want to try installing wicd and using that for wifi info.
