[solved] Wi-Fi not detected

Post by neha037 » Sat Oct 19, 2019 5:09 am

I installed Linux Mint. I can't see the option to connect to my wi-fi. It only shows a wired connection which I don't have.
I am new to Linux. I searched for the query and it said to go to the "Drive Manager" and update drives. When I went there, they said to connect to the internet or insert a booting disk. As I had no access to the internet, I inserted the booting drive but the operation of terminated saying that it can't connect to the site.
I really want to start with Linux. Please help.

Hello neha037,
Welcome to the Linux Mint Forums.

We need to know what wifi card your machine uses in order to help. It will be very helpful if you can find a way to connect via Ethernet cable. until we get the right driver for your card set up.

If your not sure which wifi card your machine has, please go to a terminal and type this command and post the output it gives you.

Code: Select all

inxi -Nn

Your wireless device looks "down" according "inxi -Nn" output.

You can try to install iwlwifi backport driver with following commands. Restart your PC after installation, also you must disable secureboot from BIOS/EFI settings.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-hwe-team/backport-iwlwifi
sudo apt update
sudo apt install backport-iwlwifi-dkms
If the problem is not solved, share the output of command below.

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -k | grep iwlwifi

I don't have internet connection to install as WiFi is not working.

You can download the package from following link and you can install the package with (right-click) Gdebi.

backport-iwlwifi-dkms_8042-0ubuntu1_all.deb

Hello neha037,

if you can't use your wired ethernet, then try it with a temporarily connection via mobile phone and its wifi. You have to connect a mobile phone with USB to the laptop and for

a) Android: look in the settings for network and tethering > USB tethering
b) Iphone: look in the settings for personal hotspot and then USB only.

So you can follow either my suggestion or the one from kelebek333.
