Connection failed Activation of network connection failed on HP Pavilion tx 1000 running 19.3 Cinnamon with Broadcom

Post by 2Tired2Tell »

Hey,

I'm new to Linux Mint and Linux as a whole, but trying to transfer from Windows which I've used all my life. I also know little to nothing about what code is really doing when run. Researching online found Linux Mint to be highly recommended for someone in my place so I'm trying it out on an older computer before completely switching over. That said I'm having a great deal of difficultly getting the WiFi to work and after doing a lot of research via google, youtube, & this forum I've decided to throw the towel in and just ask for help...

I am running 19.3 Cinnamon (32bit) on an HP Pavilion tx 1000 with a Broadcom bcm 4321 wireless card and started by running the Driver Manager and tried installing the recommended bcmwl-kernel-source driver. This sort of worked where I can see I have a wireless option in the network area and even can see the wireless networks and try connecting. However, after I try to connect and give the WEP key it thinks for a bit then comes back with "Connection failed Activation of network connection failed."

With that driver I currently have this setup info... hopefully this is what you'd need (I based it off requests in other forum posts):

Sorry, hope I did all that right. Don't really know what I'm looking at for most of it. =(

Looking through different forums and such I tried using the recommendations this site gave (https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... s.html?m=1) to no avail.

I also found this (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110) with running the commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

I did the purging and installing of "firmware-b43-installer" & "firmware-b43legacy-installer" and neither even yielded the current results I have where my wifi light was orange instead of blue on the computer and doing the "rfkill list" didn't even yield the "phy0" or "brcmwl-0" listings.

Also seeing this (viewtopic.php?f=53&t=267005), I tried turning off "secure boot" but I don't seem to have it or UEFI from what I can tell.

Code: Select all

p@Php-LM:~$ mokutil --sb-state
EFI variables are not supported on this system

Any thoughts or help you have would be most welcome & thank you in advance for taking the time to help me! Let me know if you need more info too!

Think that's everything... Do you mind helping me learn too by explaining what each command is doing?

Thanks again!

So an update on further things I've tried...

1) I had read about updating the kernel so looked and mine was 5 which I then updated to 5.3. Did all updates from that and rebooted but still no joy

2) went in and did these 2 things...

Code: Select all

p@Php-LM:~$ sudo apt remove broadcom-sta-dkms bcmwl-kernel-source
[sudo] password for p:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package 'broadcom-sta-dkms' is not installed, so not removed
The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
  b43-fwcutter
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove it.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  bcmwl-kernel-source
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 7,180 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
(Reading database ... 321940 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing bcmwl-kernel-source (6.30.223.271+bdcom-0ubuntu5~18.04.1) ...
Removing all DKMS Modules
Done.
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
Processing triggers for initramfs-tools (0.130ubuntu3.9) ...
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-5.3.0-24-generic
I: The initramfs will attempt to resume from /dev/dm-2
I: (/dev/mapper/mint--vg-swap_1)
I: Set the RESUME variable to override this.
p@Php-LM:~$ sudo apt autoremove
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  b43-fwcutter
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
After this operation, 75.8 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] y
(Reading database ... 321853 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing b43-fwcutter (1:019-3) ...
Processing triggers for man-db (2.8.3-2ubuntu0.1) ...
3) then restarted and went through Driver Manager to try to let it reinstall the Broadcom driver to the new kernel then restarted again

4) post boot I was able to log on to my network and have it recognizes, but I could not load any web pages through firefox so I rebooted again to see what that would do

5) on reboot I checked for new drivers and updates but found none. The wireless was on and had found my network again and is now actively trying to connect (which is new), but unlike pre-boot where the icon final showed it had connected this keeps the wifi sign and 3 dots and just keep trying and coming up with the same "Connection failed Activation of network connection failed" after every search it keeps automatically doing (even now while I write this using the ethernet card instead.

So seems like may have progressed a bit, but still rather lost. =( Would welcome any thoughts! Thanks!
