[SOLVED] Wifi networks not showing up on Dell XPS 13

Post by prismavoid08 »

I got a new Dell XPS 13 for Christmas and was trying to install the newest version of Linux Mint. I installed it on a flash drive, but when I booted it, when I clicked on network it showed options for "Network settings" and "Network connections." After I tried installing it onto the hard drive, Wifi networks still didn't show up. I tried the same thing on my old laptop and was able to access Wifi. Are there any drivers that may be missing and if so which ones, and where can I download them?

Have you created a network connection? If not, go into network connections and create one.

I am trying to connect to an outside Wifi network, not create one. How do I find the Wifi networks that are visible?

Hello prismavoid08,

it is possible that you have to install an additional driver. When I'm right, your Dell laptop has only wifi. You can maybe use a temporarily internet connection with the wifi of a mobile phone and USB tethering:

USB Tethering Android

1. connect your phone to your computer via USB (your phone charger hopefully has a usable, detachable USB cable)
2. go to Settings > Wireless & Networks in your mobile phone, there to ...More
3. go to tethering & mobile hotspot
4. activate USB tethering

USB Tethering Iphone

1. connect your phone to your computer via USB (your phone charger hopefully has a usable, detachable USB cable)
2. go to Settings > Personal Hotspot > Activate in your phone
3. activate USB only

If you have internet, then please run the following terminal commands and show the outputs here:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Code: Select all

lspci
Otherwise with no wifi, please write down the output for ethernet and/or network controller of the lspci command and the output under network from the inxi command and post it here.

Here are screenshots I took of the outputs of the commands you provided.
Sorry for the low resolution, I couldn't upload anything larger.

Hello prismavoid08,

thank you for the outputs but you could have copied and pasted it here as text in codeblocks (the </> button above the text box). You have an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 card and the kernel module/driver "iwlwifi" isn't loaded. In order to get the card working, it is necessary to run the system with a kernel >=5.1. Please open the update manager > view > linux kernel, choose the recent 5.3 kernel, install it and reboot your laptop to see, whether it works then.

Thank you so much for the help!
It took all night but installing the newest version of the kernel worked.

Hello prismavoid08,

you're welcome :) What took a whole night to install the kernel?
