[SOLVED] WiFi & Bluetooth problem on my HP 14-bs022la (RTL8723DE)

Post by mga »

Hey!

I'm new in the Linux World and I'm really enjoying it.

I have a big issue on my fresh installed Cinnamon 19.3, I can't see the WiFi connections!

Now I have internet via Ethernet cable so I can test some of the things I found but with no good results.

So... I have some information to command-line outputs I see you need:

Try the extended version of the rtlwifi_new driver:

(item 8 )

Afterwards, you might need to switch the antenna selection:

I have unblocked the bluetooth I think:

Code: Select all

rfkill list
0: hci0: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
Anyway I tried the command but got nothing. I mean, the bluetooth still doesn't works.

Hello mga,

can you try your previous kernel. The 5.3.0-26 is known to cause many problems, so we could exclude, that this kernel causes the bluetooth issue. Reboot and choose the previous kernel in the grub menu under "Advanced options" (if you don't see the grub menu during boot, press the Shift key several times after the new boot begins). There was a bluetooth issue with your wifi card, but it was solved from kernel 4.17 on.

What is the previous version of the kernel without that issue?

It doesn't works. Tried with left and right shift.

Maybe I need to install/update grub?

Is there a problem if I use that old version of the kernel?

Try holding the left shift key down at boot. That works for some.

I only wanted to explain, that there was a bluetooth issue, which is solved with the kernel 4.17 and newer, so all should be okay with 5.x kernels.

You can also try it with the Esc key, but this key is also used (according to the laptop user manual) together with F10 to get into the BIOS (Setup Utility). But if the Shift key doesn't work, try it with the ESC key, which works on my laptop.

All right guys, through trial and error I have found a way to make WiFi and Bluetooth works!

First of all, I need to say that my Bluetooth works with the fresh and clean Cinnamon 19.3.

I found the best way that I solved the WiFi problem but somehow I do something that makes Bluetooth does not works, just shows "Searching for devices..." all the time.

So I figure out that each time I install ALL the updates that Update Manager shows to me the Bluetooth stop working.

I reinstalled the system several times and tried to exclude (without knowledge) the things I think may make the problem like:

blueberry 1.3.4 (a Bluetooth configuration tool)

And when the Update Manager install all the updates but that tool, the Bluetooth breaks so the blueberry is not the problem.

I reinstalled the system again and I excluded only the Kernel 5.3.0.26.95 update. Bluetooth breaks too!

Well... I got tired of trying to see which update causes the issue, so I reinstalled the system and I don't install ANY update via the Update Manager and following these steps I did that the WiFi and Bluetooth works:

1. Reinstall/Install Cinnamon 19.3 and DO NOT install ANY update via Update Manager
2. Establish temporary internet connection by other means (in my case via Ethernet cable)
3. Install RTL8723DE module with the following commands:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install git
git clone https://github.com/smlinux/rtl8723de.git -b 5.0-up
sudo dkms add ./rtl8723de
sudo dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414
sudo depmod -a
4. Reboot and it is DONE! Now the WiFi and Bluetooth are working.

Extra data: as newbie I found that I need the RTL8723DE module via the command lsusb and searching about the ID of the Realtek Semiconductor Corp. (0bda:b009 in my case).

I hope to help someone with this.

To end I have a question for the experts: do you know what specific update breaks the Bluetooth?

Hello mga,

I'm glad, you could solve it for you with the driver from that github website :) I will notice it for similar problems.

I've looked through the update history in the update manager (I have upgraded from 19.2 to 19.3, so I can look back to end of October 2019) and at the end of October there were some bluetooth related updates: libbluetooth3, bluetooth, bluez, bluez-cups, bluez-obexd. All were updated from version 5.48-0ubuntu3.1 to 5.48-0ubuntu3.2. I don't know, which versions come with a fresh install of LM 19.3, maybe these updates are made with the first system update after the installation?

Hello mga,

thanks for your good tutorial on solving your problem :) How did you figured out, that linux-firmware was the culprit and which version of it is the default install one, which should not be updated?

Thanks sleeper12 for the clarification :)

I've just seen, that you can force to install the previous version in the synaptic package manager > package > force version.

It wasn't easy for me, I reinstalled the system many times. But when I learn more I used Timeshift on my fresh installed Cinnamon and I installed the packages (one by one) I thought may cause the issue. So I clearly identified which package is causing the problem :)

The default installed one on my Cinnamon 19.3 is 1.173.9 and the version which should not be updated is 1.173.14.

So, 1.173.9 is the one that solves the problem, correct?
