Hello linux4mint,

your wifi card seems to be a problematical case also in earlier versions of Ubuntu/Linux. Until Ubuntu 16.04 there was the solution to take another driver (rt3290sta) instead. But I don't know, if it would work now, because I found only solutions until Kernel 4.4. Maybe there is someone, who could compile it to newer Kernels?

Another possibility would be to try it with ndiswrapper and the windows driver (an older windows driver is better for that):

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... diswrapper

Or you decide to exchange your Ralink card against another known to work in Linux. You could ask HP, which one would fit for your device.

You will likely need to remove the internal wifi so the USB can work as there is a pin on the internal card that the rfkill signal goes through

Hello linux4mint,

I've found a thread in the german linux forum with exactly the same problem like yours. There would be a way to unblock the Ralink card with masking a specific pin on the card. There is a picture shown in this thread. But to get an USB wifi running, you have to blacklist the rt2800pci module with the following:

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist rt2800pci" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_rt2800pci.conf
Reboot and the Belkin adapter should work, if there is no additional driver needed. If it doesn't work, please show the output with plugged-in adadpter from:

Code: Select all

If you mask the pin on the wifi card there is no need for the USB wifi

Hello linux4mint,

n your case the masking would be a bit more complicated, but just in case, you can find the service manual here:

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04409502
(on page 61 is the WLAN module)

Hello linuxmint,

no matter for a late reply and thank's for the good news. Your issue isn't really solved, but you know now, how you could solve it by masking the PIN of your wireless card. If you still want to do this, you would have to delete the file blacklist_rt2800pci.conf, so that the module can be loaded again. You can do this in the terminal as follows:

Code: Select all

sudo rm -v /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist_rt2800pci.conf
If it's okay for with your USB wifi adapter, please set the thread to maybe [partially SOLVED] by editing your opening post and add this to the title.
