Wifi not working after install - RTL8723DE

Posted: Tue Jun 23, 2020 5:46 pm

I've just installed 20 (Cinnamon), and I've had the nasty surprise of finding that wifi wasn't even seen by the system (when it worked perfectly fine with the live version).

I've followed the instructions given here viewtopic.php?f=53&t=322651&p=1833055&h ... e#p1833055 by sleeper12, and 'lo and behold, the OS now sees the card, but tells me no wireless network are available. I've tried to change the antenna parameter from 1 to 4 with the following command :

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r rtl8723de && sleep 10 && modprobe rtl8723de ant_sel=1
And, unfortunately still no go.

Any suggestions ?

Here are the system informations

1 to 4?

There's only 1 and 2 to try. There are no more flavours, as the default laptop WiFi chipset has only two antenna sockets.

Can you post results of:

Code: Select all

 rfkill list

Code: Select all

 mokutil --sb-state

Secure boot is disabled and wireless (and bluetooth) are not blocked, either through hardware or software.

Code: Select all

rfkill list
0: phy1: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
2: hci0: Bluetooth
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state
SecureBoot disabled

That all looks good. Try:

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe rtl8723de
Or

Code: Select all

 sudo ifconfig wlp2s0
If that doesn't help, see if you can turn wifi on in Bios or reset Bios to default.

Which one worked for you?

Oops. I didn't pay attention (I need new glasses) and used both.

Well, I just updated the kernel and, of course, it stopped functioning. I guess I'll try the whole process again...

You may have lost the driver with a kernel update. Does this show a driver in use?

Code: Select all

lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net

Well, one modprobe rtw88 and a reboot later, it works. I'll see if it keeps.

I'm not sure how you got rtw88, but if it works..ok.

Well, here I am, with the same problem I had before.
Ever since the original install, each and every time I did an update, I had to tinker to have the wifi work again. And then it stopped working for no apparent reason. After trying a few things, I got fed up and reinstalled the whole system (and again, the wifi worked without a hitch in the live session).

Well, still no luck, before and after I updated the system to 5.4, nor after I installed the git module with the following commands :

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/smlinux/rtl8723de.git -b current
dkms add ./rtl8723de
dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414
depmod -a
reboot
and no more luck with a subsequent

Code: Select all

 modprobe -r rtl8723de
I have also tried the rtl8821ce-dkms module found in the repository (after a clean uninstall of the git module) and it didn't work either.

I really don't know what else to try.

Here are the results of a few tests :

Secureboot is disabled and rfkill list gives nothing (understandable I suppose as the system reports no driver for the wireless module).

Any idea ?

It looks like you are missing a driver. Since you said the rtw88 worked before, try #7 here:

I'd forgotten about rtw88. Unfortunately, it didn't work this time.
To be precise, I compiled and installed it with no issue (I even got a big INSTALL SUCCESS at the end). But after cleaning and rebooting, still no driver associated with the wifi. Worse, a modprobe rtw88 only gave me the following :

Code: Select all

modprobe: FATAL: Module rtw88 not found in directory /lib/modules/5.4.0-59-generic
As a side note, I checked what exactly was loaded with lsmod | grep rtw, and I had that :

Code: Select all

rtw_8723de 16384 0
rtw_8723d 53248 1 rtw_8723de
rtw_pci 24576 1 rtw_8723de
rtw_core 176128 2 rtw_8723d,rtw_pci
mac80211 843776 2 rtw_core,rtw_pci
cfg80211 704512 2 rtw_core,mac80211
Might there be some kind of conflict that prevents the module from associating with the hardware ?

Try this again:

Code: Select all

 sudo modprobe rtl8723de
You might need to reboot

Same result as for rtw88 :

Code: Select all

modprobe: FATAL: Module rtl8723de not found in directory /lib/modules/5.4.0-59-generic

Ok, try this one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install git dkms
git clone https://github.com/smlinux/rtl8723de.git -b current
dkms add ./rtl8723de
dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414
depmod -a
Then reboot

It finally worked !
I don't get why the exact same thing didn't a couple of hours ago, though...

Of note : when I rebooted, the computer hanged on the loading screen with no way of knowing what was happening. I had to hard reboot it after a few minutes and it then started with no issue, and a working wifi.

Oh, I think when you did it before, you maybe then removed the driver with modprobe -r.
