Lenovo S21e lost wifi upon install of Linux Mint Cinnamon 20

Post by ZV43 »

I had wifi with Windows 8.1, & I *think* I had it running linux from the flash drive, but I'm not certain. But with real install (erasing Windows), wifi went away.

Typing in random codes (linux is a foreign language) from other people's threads yielded some information, I think: Soft blocked yes, hard blocked no. Iwconfig says: lo no wireless extensions. Ok, now what?

I'm typing this on my android phone, if y'all need my code outputs, do I copy them by hand, letter by letter, or what? How do people show you their codes when they have no wifi?

You should be able to just copy & paste the commands & results. Post the results of:

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxz

Code: Select all

 rfkill list

Code: Select all

 mokutil --sb-state

I can't just copy & paste from the laptop to the phone. Laptop has no internet. I have to type stuff in letter by letter.

Code: Select all

I think you need a wifi driver. See if you can install it in Driver Manager, likely it's bcmwl-kernel-source. If it needs a temporary internet connection, use phone tethering:

I dunno how to attach an image, but my phone screenshot says:

Wi-Fi Off
Wi-Fi is turned off when USB tethering or Mobile Hotspot is active. To turn on Wi-Fi, turn off USB tethering or Mobile hotspot.

When I open Firefox on the laptop to test the internet, it says:
metro by TMobile
Your plan does not include Mobile Hotspot. Please call 1-888-8metro8 if you have questions regarding your plan.

Is there any point calling them? I can't afford to switch plans.
They have no right to dictate how I use WiFi, which is unrelated to them!

Maybe you can use public wifi or a friend's wifi to install the driver you need.

Could my dad put the driver from his Linux machine on a flash drive for me to use? Would the same driver work, or would he have to hunt for the one for my machine?

How would that help? My phone has wifi, my laptop doesn't. Trying to share the wifi via USB cable does not work. It doesn't matter which wifi I try, if tethering is retardedly disabled.

It might be possible to put the driver on a flash & install it that way, but I can't help with that. Only other thing I can suggest is maybe get an inexpensive usb wifi adapter that works out of the box such as Panda.

i only had to wait a month for funds to get that Panda wifi dongle. seems to have worked smoothly. got me online long enough to download the driver to get online without it.
