Network Manager problem with auto connecting to wifi with hidden SSID

Post by ergo owl »

Hello,

When I start my computer I want Network Manager to automatically connect to my home wifi which has a hidden SSID. Instead, I have to always press the NM applet, press Network Settings, press Connect to Hidden Network, choose my home wifi in the drop down menu and finally, press connect. If I close my laptop and later open it up again the wifi has disconnected and I have to redo all the steps again.

I have been living with this issue for a couple of weeks and so far Ive tried random things I could find in forums like reinstalling my network driver, reinstalling network manager, changing the powersave.conf value to "2", I also created a bash script using "nmcli connection up" that I would run on startup and it kinda fixes the problem but it only runs after boot and not if I close the laptop and open it up at a later time so its like a duct tape solution.

I THINK the problem has to do with network manager because when I press the NM applet and check Network Settings for my wifi, under the identity "tab" the box with "Connect automatically" is ticked which obviously doesnt work. Furthermore, I have disabled ipv6 in the ipv6 "tab" but under the "details" tab it still shows that I have an ipv6 address. If Ive properly disabled ipv6 I should not have an ipv6 address right? right?

I have no idea how to fix this but I really hope someone else does because its driving me nuts. Below is my inxi -Fxz.

I have xfce some times it helps if I remove the old applet and install a new one. Wait for somebody with cinnamon to tell you how to do.

Did You try to specifying the BSSID from network settings?

I had not thought of that so I tried it however, after specifying the BSSID, saving the settings and restarting the computer - the problem remains. No auto-connection.

Felt like a great suggestion but unfortunately it didnt work.

I read somewhere that xfce is a more stable DE than cinnamon, not really sure what that means or how a DE can extend into better wireless functionality but if thats true I will probably give it a try if all else fails.

I assume cinnamon has a network manager applet like xfce. You remove it and you install a new one.

I had the same problem . After searching the Net I found this : https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/issues/9424

In terminal:
1. nmcli connection show and find the ssid of the wifi connection you would like to connect to
2. nmcli connection modify {connectionUUID} wifi.hidden yes
3. sudo service network-manager restart

Something Important - There is no ' = ' sign between wifi.hidden and yes

--
Test it and say if it works for you .

Install and try 5.4.0-26-generic kernel, tell us the result.

It works during the active session but after I reboot it is back to square one. This feels promising Im thinking I just need to figure out how to make "nmcli connection modify {connectionUUID} wifi.hidden yes" a permanent setting?

I have also reinstalled my computer with LM 20 XFCE instead of Cinnamon. As for the network manager settings I still have powersave.conf value at 2 instead of 3 and I still have the BSSID fixed in my hidden wifi settings as suggested in a post above. I changed the ipv6 setting from "ignore" to "disable" and it does seem to run much smoother overall although it obviously doesnt have any impact on the auto connect problem.

Im still on the 5.4.0-47 generic Kernel, I will look into changing to the 5.4.0-46 generic version if saving the "nmcli connection modify {connectionUUID} wifi.hidden yes" setting turns into a dead end.

Re: Network Manager problem with auto connecting to wifi

So the current status of my problem is that I cant find a way for the settings to stay permanent. I found another line of code that makes network manager auto connect during the active session:
1. sudo nmcli con mod {connectionSSID} connection.autoconnect yes
2. sudo service network-manager restart

Outcome: NM connects automatically to my network after first prompting me for the password that is already filled in I just need to press connect. After boot however, I still have to connect manually.

I found the file which logs my wifi settings in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections and it looks like this:

Code: Select all

[connection]
id={connectionSSID}
uuid={connectionUUID}
type=wifi
interface-name=wlp3s0
permissions=
timestamp=1600353670

[wifi]
bssid=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
hidden=true
mac-address-blacklist=
mode=infrastructure
seen-bssids=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX;
ssid={connectionSSID}

[wifi-security]
key-mgmt=wpa-psk
psk=xXxXxXxXXXXxXXxXXxX

[ipv4]
dns-search=
method=auto

[ipv6]
addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy
dns-search=
ip6-privacy=0
method=disabled

[proxy]

Is this where I should paste the commands for autoconnect and if so under which bracket? Appriciate any advice, feels like its nearing the finish line on this one.

Hmmm. I'm using 5.4.0-47-generic with cinnamon . No such problems.
However, i made some settings changes in network manager.
The changes i made in "Network connections" :
1.WiFi --> the connection name--> WiFi tab --> Device field - select the MAC address provided
2.Ipv4 tab --> Method - Automatic DHCP Addresses Only --> DNS servers - I used 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1

You can delete the profiles in your "Network connections" , or delete them from "/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections" (sudo required)
and start from beginning by creating new WiFi connection.

Try this to make and test new applet:

Code: Select all

ps -ef | grep nm-applet
My results is:

Hidden networks do not broadcast their SSID, so this is probably why it's not auto-connecting. I'd change the router setting for that SSID so it's not hidden and see if your machine auto-connects. If it does, we'll know where to start looking for a solution.

I changed the router setting so the SSID is no longer hidden and after I rebooted my system the auto-connection worked flawlessly. Where do I go from here?

Leave everything as it is. As far as I know, there's no way to automatically connect to a hidden SSID.

Jokes aside, I auto-connect to the same hidden wifi from my other machine running LM 20 Cinnamon every day so I can tell you for a fact that it works just fine. Here are the inxi -Fxz from that machine:

If you read the code from the file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections folder from both machines you see that they are identical but, on one machine it auto-connects and on the other one it doesnt. Mysterious to say the least.

There IS a major difference in your connection parameters between the machine that connects automatically and the one that doesn't.
Machine that connects:

Code: Select all

[wifi]
bssid=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
hidden=true
mac-address-blacklist=
mode=infrastructure
seen-bssids=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX;
ssid=AWG2
Machine that doesn't:

Code: Select all

[wifi]
bssid=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX
hidden=true
mac-address-blacklist=
mode=infrastructure
seen-bssids=XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX;
ssid={connectionSSID}     <--------  different
Maybe this is the problem?

Thats my bad, I replace my network name (AWG2) from the code with {connectionSSID} when I post. I just missed one copy paste.

As for progression, I read the "man nm-settings" and apperently autoconnect=true is enabled by default which is why it doesnt show up under the [Connection] bracket. I tried adding it and it made no difference.

I also tried setting autoconnect-priority=9000 together with autoconnect-retries=10 and after that didnt work either I tried with autoconnect-retries=0 which should make nm try infinite attemps to connect to the network until succesfull. That didnt work either. Uncertain where to continue at this point. I think I will try reinstalling the applet and maybe then I will try changing the Kernel version.
