[SOLVED] Cannot install realtek wifi adapter 802.11n - linux mint 20

Post by thomast »

Hi, I have a problem on a small pc without access to the internet. Unfortunately the built-in wifi is not detected by linux, also the hw is not listed, but it worked in windows, anyway I picked a very simple realtek adapter 802.11 needing a driver RTL8188eu, which I downloaded on another machine, but the installation on the disconnected machine failed in several trials.
The system seems to recognize the device but it is not installed properly. Without internet the laptop is of no use, of course...

Is there a standalone installation and makefile available for mint20?

many thanks

0bda:f179 is the RTL8188FU chipset.

Try this:

1. Establish temporary internet connection by means of the USB tethering feature of your smartphone:

2. Then do this:

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I'll try, once at home.
Anyway I found your answer in another thread asking which USB wifi driver is built-in / plug n play with mint, which was TP-Link TL-WN725N.
So I borrowed this one from a colleague and if it works without installation in mint20, maybe I keep it, if the realtek makes trouble.
