[SOLVED] Broadcom BCM4360 on Linuxmint 20 not working properly

Post by annielm »

Solution: I ended up fixing this problem by readjust the antennae. However, I am not sure whether it was the antennae that caused the problem.

I've been using my computer for quite some days... but suddenly from today, the WIFI doesn't connect well. It constantly drops. I do have another two laptops running on WIFI, one on Windows, another on Linuxmint20. Both are working normally.

My system is up to date so far and I use bcmwl-kernel source as the driver that I installed from usb.

Here is hardware specs for references:

I went through the steps in this guide, however, I still didn't manage to get it to work. Btw my bluetooth is turned off.
When I have WIFI available:

Code: Select all

iwconfig
tun0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

wlp4s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:"somename"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: 14:91:82:7B:9B:07
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

enp5s0 no wireless extensions.
When I don't have WIFI:

Code: Select all

iwconfig
tun0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

wlp4s0 IEEE 802.11 ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated
          Retry short limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:on

enp5s0 no wireless extensions.
In both cases, the icon in the right corner shows up as WIFI connected ... and I get 65% to 73% signal etc, but it would show up as I don't have internet.

Do this to turn power management off:

Code: Select all

 sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

Ok, I just did what you said, and to confirm I check iwconfig again and saw power management is off now. However, the wifi signal is about 70%+ but it's forever connecting.... then when it's finally "connected" in the icon, there is still no internet.

Now if I do a iwconfig I actually get the ESSID and everything... but there is just no internet. This is so weird.... I just got this new computer like for a month or sth, I hope nothing is broken!

Is secure boot on? It should be off. Check:

Code: Select all

 mokutil --sb-state

Currently I unscrewed the antennae and re screwed it. Something like this and it seems to be working again. I will continue trying tmr and test it out. If that solves the problem I will mark the post as solved.

Ok, either way, keep power management off.

If it's still a problem, you can try disable IPv6:
