[SOLVED] WiFi Fails Following Restart

Post by Stillhunter »

Hi There,

I am new to Linux and having some trouble with WiFi remaining active following a restart. I am using an older computer (Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Widows Vista with a Broadcom BCM4312 802.11 (wireless 1395 WLAN mini card) ) but am running Linux Mint 20 MATE live off a USB stick to see if it will work well on this system. Btw, this same issue was experienced running Lubuntu 20.04 in the same manner. The latest USB install was created using Rufus with 20GB persistent storage. Following first boot up everything went well except no wireless connectivity. Going to the driver manager indicated the wireless device was not working and suggested using the Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver. The laptop was connect via Ethernet cable so applying the change to this drive activated a download and update. Following the install, the new driver seemed to work immediately - various wireless networks were visible and I was able to connect to my own and surf the web comfortably. The Driver Manager did prompt for a restart and when I did this everything booted up fine except again there was no wireless visible (the wireless light on the laptop was unlit). In the Driver Manager it still indicated that the Linux STA driver is in use. Switching to not using the device and then back to the STA driver has no effect. However, if I select to not use this device, restart, then select the STA driver, the wireless is back up and running fine. It seems the process of restarting disables the wireless. Apologies for the long description but any help/suggestion in how to make my wireless remain on permanently following restart would be most welcome. I am hoping to ditch Windows Vista on this older laptop and gain some new life from it and learn more about Linux in the process. Many thanks in advance!

Try the steps at https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID1.2
Will that work in a live session though?

You'll have to make an alternate connection either by ethernet cable or by connecting via your smartphone.

I think I have tried that but will do it again and report back. The existing driver as shown above does work but just seems to fail to load or become active upon restart...

You'll likely lose a new driver in a live session when you reboot anyway.

Why would I loose the driver? The live install was done with persistent storage; other files and changes appear to be retained following restart.

I didn't know it was persistent, so maybe not.

I wonder if it could be a kernel issue? Maybe try Mint 19.2 that has the 4.15 kernel which may be better for an older machine.

I tried the solution in the article linked above, namely: 1.2. Broadcom WiFi chipset: install the driver
Following the initial restart the driver was active and I was able to connect to my wireless network. Following a subsequent restart it was also active. So I think this solution seems to have done the trick. Many thanks for all your help folks!
