SOLVED: Mint 19.3 installed on HP 450 g7. Wifi not working

Post by CragHopper »

Hello. I purchased an HP 450 g7 running windows 10 in April 2020, and have finally got round to installing Linux Mint 19.3 on this machine. The installation went well, except there is no wifi. The wifi symbol shows, but no signal at all is detected.

I saw a similar post on here, with the same problem for another HP machine and followed the steps of the successful solution as follows:

sudo apt-get install build-essential git dkms
git clone https://github.com/jeremyb31/rtl8723de.git
sudo dkms add ./rtl8723de
sudo dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414

This failed.

When I type:

dkms status

I get only

rtl8723de, 5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414: added

All help very much appreciated!

Best, CragHopper

Hi CragHopper,

please post the output of the following comand to see which kernel you are running:

Code: Select all

uname -r
If it's still 4.15 perhaps a newer kernel (e.g. 5.4) has the driver for your WiFi device. :)

Are you sure your notebook is using a Realtek chip for WiFi? What does lsusb say?

Code: Select all

lsusb

Try this, one line at a time:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install git dkms
git clone https://github.com/smlinux/rtl8723de.git -b current
dkms add ./rtl8723de
dkms install rtl8723de/5.1.1.8_21285.20171026_COEX20170111-1414
depmod -a
Reboot

Hi CragHopper,

you can give the suggested solution of sleeper12 a try. lsusb gives you a hint to a Realtek device...
You also can install the newest kernel 5.4. On my Dell Latitude I got WiFi to work after updating the kernel from 4.15 to 5.4.

Hello Oliver. Sadly, Sleeper12's suggestion did not work. The module failed to compile on my kernel (5.0.0-32). Perhaps you suggestion of upgrading kernek to 5.4 will work.

I'll give it a go.

Hi CragHopper,

please also check the Driver Manager in Linux Mint. I remember some Lenovo notebooks with Realtek-WiFi which found the driver in Driver Manager. :)

The 5.0 kernel is no longer supported, so do try the 5.4 kernel.

For wifi driver, try:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get install rtl8821ce-dkms
Reboot

Hello Sleeper12! I have mover to kernel 5.4, and now all is fine. The driver showed in the driver manager, and all I had to do was to activate it.

Many thanks, CragHopper

Oliver, many thanks for your suggestion - moving to kernel 5.4 worked. I still had to go to the driver manager and activate the driver.

Best, CragHopper.

PS: How do I activate the "SOLVED" label for my query?
