Can't reach every Website with Repeater

Post by rudibroo »

Hey everyone,

so I installed Linux Mint 20.1 yesterday again and upgraded to Kernel 5.10. I updated everything and everything seems to work fine, besides the network.

At first I thought it's a general issue with my wifi-card, that I can't reach certain websites (while being connected with my repeater wifi).
Then i connected to my router wifi and now I can reach every website, but obviously very slow. So I guess the Problem is somehow only connected to my repeater, or maybe not.
I already tried disabling ipv6 and using dns "1.1.1.1" and "8.8.8.8", didn't work.

I'm using the "TP-Link RE200 WLAN Repeater".

I hope someone can help me using my repeater wifi in order to have a fast connection AND reach every website.

Thanks!

It looks like you are running an unsupported kernel. You will hardly get help here.

Not being an expert on this matter, I might misread your problem. If not, this is my solution (after days if not weeks of trial). I am running Linux Mint 20.1 Xfce and WiFi connect to the net over a repeater which connects to my router:

*** 1 ***
My problem was: I could ping and connect with firefox to, say, google.com and others, but not to, say, brother.com and others WHEN I USED MY REPEATER. Using my router alone, no problem. And, this connection problem with repeater occured only with Linux Mint 20.1 and Debian 11 Buster/sid (Mint 20 is based on Buster/sid anyway); Ubuntu 18.04 and Debian 10 were faultless in this respect.

*** 2 ***
So, I a) apt installed connman, connman-ui, connman-gtk and cmst (maybe some not necessary, I don't know), b) purged network-manager and network-manager-gnome, and c) made sure that /etc/network/interfaces only contained this:
/etc/network/interfaces
# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)
# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d
nothing more, and d) put conmman-ui-gtk into "Setting > Session and Startup > Autostart", and rebooted

*** 3 ***
After rebooting, eveything was fine with connman, I could not only connect with my router, but also with my repeater to every website :) Don't ask me why.

Hope, this helps,

mintcub

P.S. In a different forum, they found that all internet portals I could connect to were IPv6. and those I could not connect to with the repeater and network-manager were IPv4. But they could not explain why connman worked, and not why Debian 10 and dependend distros were ok with my repeater (TP-Link TL-WA850RE WLAN Repeater) and network-manager.

I am running a supported kernel, i.e., Kernel: 5.4.0-58-generic x86_64 bits, that was installed by my Linux Mint 20.1 without my doing. And I have the same problem, see my post above.

I have the RE220. Update the firmware.

Thanks, will do. I cannot tackle the repeater right now. But why would connman have nor problem with the present firmware, while the new NetworkManager does?

Check your RE200 to see which hardware version you have? Hardware version 1, 2, 3, or 4? Hardware version is on the label on the unit.
Update the firmware according to your hardware version.
Updating the wrong firmware version may brick your repeater.
Good luck.

"brick"? Sounds horrible, I think I'll stick to connman and forget about network-manager. But thanks, anyway.

Re: Can't reach every Website with Repeater (SOLVED)

According to the manufacturer I had an older repeater version (v5). Using the new improved version (v7) of the same make there is no problem at all with network-manager :)
EDIT: My repeater is TP-Link TL-WA850RE
