Low wi-fi strength at 44%

Post by deepakdeshp »

Hello,
My Ryzen system shows wi-fi strength of 44% whereas my AMD A8 processor 5 year old system shows 68 % wi-fi strength. Both systems in the same room, Ryzen running 5.8.45 and A8 running 5.8.44 kernels. When both ran the same kernel, the result was the same. Both run Mint 20.1. Any suggestions please?

Well, I'd simply revert to the older kernel and wait for the redeeming update.

Any kernel I use gives me 44%. The older kernel and the newer one give me around 68% signal strength on my 5 year old laptop and not the newer one. The newer one gives 44% on all kernels.

The driver for the above Realtek wi-fi card has to be updated .

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get install rtl8821ce-dkms

So, have you disabled wifi power saving or not?

Power saving is disabled. The question is about the signal strength.

Well, I'll just point out that signal strength is impacted by power saving. I'll leave you to it.

You could tweak the antenna configurations, to see if one works better than another.

Try the following: Set the antenna configuration, then scan for APs. Change to a different antenna setup, and do another scan. With each scan, note the signal quality and levels, and even how many APs are seen.

Open a Terminal, then copy-and-paste these commands, one by one. The scans are filtered to show signal quality/level for each AP...

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod rtl8821ce
sudo modprobe rtl8821ce ant_sel=1
sudo iwlist wlo1 scan | grep -i qual
#
sudo rmmod rtl8821ce
sudo modprobe rtl8821ce ant_sel=2
sudo iwlist wlo1 scan | grep -i qual

If ant_sel=1 showed the better results, make it the default...

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8821ce ant_sel=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ce_ant.conf
If ant_sel=2 showed the better results, make it the default...

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8821ce ant_sel=2" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8821ce_ant.conf

What's the output of the following command-line? ...

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install -y sysfsutils>/dev/null&&systool -vm rtl8821ce

P.S. Confirm that Secure Boot is disabled in you BIOS, as it's known to interfere with device drivers.

There was marginal improvement from Antenna 1 to Antenna 2 a gain of 2. The output of the commands suggested is

There are numerous useful control parameters to research, such as the receiver (RX) gain and the transmitter (TX) power.

Make notes detailing any changes you make, so they can be undone if necessary!

I will need to study the parameters and how to change them.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

Another useful diagnostic utility is wavemon...

Code: Select all

sudo apt install wavemon

You can walk around with your laptop, as wavemon displays the signal quality changes in real-time.

Curious thing about wavemon: my 64 bit main machine will not display the histogram (F2) at all but my 32 bit netbook does, no problem. Thought it might be a ncurses thing but both have the default ncurses install.

I found LinSSID to be as good, but it has to be run with sudo.

I also had problems with RoG wifi (occasionally wouldn't reconnect after nightly suspend until a reboot), but I changed the channel the router broadcast on to one that was clear of all my neighbours' broadcasts and it's worked properly ever since (touch wood).
