Where's My INternet <SOLVED>

Post by loybanks »

Can't recall ever having this problem as a former Windows user for many years. But I know things do happen.

My Wireless Internet Internal System Setting is gone. My Internet source works fine and is loading properly. Obviously must be internal system problem. Will not access web sites in Firefox or Chrome. Even used Timeshift to go back to 4/1, but that didn't help either. So must be an internal system setting. Frankly have never had this problem with LinuxMint 20.1 either. Frankly I love my LinuxMint 20.1. This is first time. Hope you can help. Thanks.

Let's see:

Code: Select all

 rfkill list && iwconfig && mokutil --sb-state

Just checked Pinging thru Command Line and worked fine. Very confusing.

Cancel the pinging statement above. It does not ping!! I tried a couple pings and neither worked.

The rfkill.... above did not work either.

Sorry I forgo to mention that the problem is on my HP Laptop. So I cannot send you copies of what happened with the command line stuff. I am using my desktop for contacting you.

Running the rfkill.... did not work. Told me I needed to install mokutil. I tried to install by command line but that did not work either.

So where do we go from here? Thanks.

Check iwconfig on the HP one. Does it say power management is On? If so, turn it off:

Code: Select all

 sudo sed -i 's/3/2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf
Reboot

Can you temporarily tether your HP laptop to a web-connected smartphone, or use a wifi dongle?

Confirm that Secure Boot is disabled in your laptop BIOS, as it's known to interfere with device drivers.

Once you're online, on your laptop open a Terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T), then copy-and-paste the following command, then tap Enter...

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --reinstall install firmware-b43-installer bcmwl-kernel-source
Reboot.

Check your laptop wifi again.

Someone in this AskUbuntu thread solved their BCM43228 wifi problem by upgrading their HP BIOS.

Old dummy me! As I have said before it just doesn't pay to get old. I am 81 now.

My memory goes wacko many times. As an example anytime I have had problems with my Laptop I always bring it into room with my Desktop and Modem so I can hookup to Ethernet. So why I said I did not have any connection is ridiculous. And I apologize!

And the sudo right above has solved the problem for the moment. I am now on the Net thru Wireless. NOW! Can you explain to me what this sudo did to fix the issue? I am most curious. If I experience additional problems I will get back to the Forum. Thanks to all for the help. Loy Banks

For safety reasons, Linux enforces privilege levels. A regular user isn't given as much access authority as a system administrator, because their lack of technical expertise could inadvertently harm the operating system.

Sometimes a regular user needs to execute a command for an action that requires admin authority. That's what the "sudo" prefix provides.

Whatever command that immediately follows sudo will run with admin privileges. You are configured for permission to use sudo, which is why the system asks for your password to confirm your identity.

The command in my previous post installs WiFi device-driver software, firmware, which requires admin authority. So, sudo gave the "apt-get install" command the ability to run with root (admin) privileges. The privilege to install software.

Sudo's effect is temporary. It times-out after a short while, and so it will again ask for your password when you invoke it.
