No WiFi P2P adapters found

Post by CDiMa »

Hi all,
I'm moving my first steps on this brand new DELL XPS 17 laptop and trying to recreate a working environment which I'm used to from my preceding systems.
Today I installed Gnome Network Displays which implements Miracast to use it with my TVs.

First the usual info: I installed Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyssa amd64 Cinnamon with linux-20.4-oem kernel

Apart of gnome network displays complaining I obtain this:

Code: Select all

claudio@chiaio:~$ sudo wpa_cli p2p_find
Selected interface 'wlp4s0'
FAIL
Since I have it working on my old laptop also running on Ulyssa 20.1, I expected it to work.

Any hints on which direction to look for a solution?

Thanks!

Wrong one. You need linux-oem-20.04b.

Fix that first.

Hmmm, I'm not sure if I can do that... I chose to follow instructions from the sound gurus to make audio work and the only combination I found working was with kernel 5.6... I'll try searching for a version of firmware for the audio chip that will work with kernel 5.10. Otherwise I won't trade sound for miracast...
Thanks anyway for the hint and if I find a way to use the 5.10 kernels I'll report back here the results

Ok, fixed:

Code: Select all

It could be helpful to post step-by-step details of your working 5.10 setup, for other Dell XPS 9700 owners with audio problems in the original thread.

Feels good to give back to the community.

I didn't follow up on the "No Sound" thread because it wasn't a particular brilliant solution, just a simple package install.
Anyway I followed your suggestion and reported there.

Thank you again!

Wrong one. You need linux-oem-20.04b.

Fix that first.
I'm running now on a 5.10 kernel installed by linux-oem-20.04b
Gnome Network Manager still complains with this message: "No usable wireless adapters were found. Please verify that Wi-Fi is enabled and Wi-Fi P2P operations are available in both NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant."
I had gnome network displays working without having to do any fancy stuff on my previous system, wich is also a Linux Mint 20.1 Ulyana install, so I'm assuming that both NetworkManager and wpa_supplicant have all the features and enablings needed.
On that other machine I see that the wifi interface supports a lot of modes not listed on this one:
IBSS, AP/VLAN, monitor, P2P-client, P2P-GO,P2P-device
i
I assume that the P2P modes are the missing ones.

Any ideas?

Download and install the latest firmware:

Open a Terminal window (Ctrl-Alt-T), then copy-and-paste the following three commands, one by one...

Code: Select all

cd ~/Downloads
wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware_1.197_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.197_all.deb
Reboot.

On that other machine I see that the wifi interface supports a lot of modes not listed on this one:
IBSS, AP/VLAN, monitor, P2P-client, P2P-GO,P2P-device

Compare those "other machine" modes to the output of this Terminal command on your XPS 9700...

Code: Select all

iw phy|egrep -i "IBSS|VLAN|P2P"

Can you upgrade your 1.6.3 BIOS? The latest is 1.7.2 for XPS 9700. Use your Service Tag for the correct download from the Dell support site.

Download and install the latest firmware:

First I'd like to thank you for your patience..

I've installed the suggested firmware...

Code: Select all

apt show linux-firmware
Package: linux-firmware
Version: 1.197
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: misc
Maintainer: Ubuntu Kernel Team <kernel-team@lists.ubuntu.com>

Conflicts: atmel-firmware
Breaks: linux-firmware-raspi2 (<= 1.20190819-0ubuntu2), linux-firmware-snapdragon (<= 1.2-0ubuntu1)
Replaces: atmel-firmware, linux-firmware-snapdragon (<= 1.2-0ubuntu1), linux-restricted-common
Download-Size: unknown
APT-Manual-Installed: yes
APT-Sources: /var/lib/dpkg/status
Description: Firmware for Linux kernel drivers
This package provides firmware used by Linux kernel drivers.

... and I have updated the bios to the latest available from support:

Code: Select all

sudo dmidecode -s bios-version
1.7.2
I still have problems with the dreaded " No p2p adapters found" message from gnome display adapters.

Code: Select all

iw dev
phy#0
	Interface wlp4s0
		ifindex 2
		wdev 0x1
		addr 9c:b6:d0:3f:18:8b
		ssid FASTWEB-CASALI20
		type managed
		channel 100 (5500 MHz), width: 80 MHz, center1: 5530 MHz
		txpower 20.00 dBm
From what I've found iw dev should have shown an Unnamed/non-netdev interface device with type P2P-device.

At this point I'm stuck again...

What should I do now?

The good news is that your QCA6390 hardware supports P2P. The bad news is that its ath11k wireless driver module doesn't yet.

On this ath11k info page, for example. Scroll down to the Supported Modes section, to see P2P mode: unsupported.

The earlier chipset ath9k driver module does support P2P. It appears that your hardware is ahead of the firmware.

Thanks for the update!

At this point should I file a request to Qualcomm to get p2p in the firmware (I understand it is written by them) or is this a missing implementation in the ath11k linux module that implements the driver?

Their ath10k driver doesn't yet have P2P either.

The BrosTrend dongles assert support for P2P. Their ads also claim Linux compatibility, displaying assorted distro logos -- but the fine print is, "To install the driver on Linux OSes, an Internet connection is required at the time of installation, so as to be able to download the driver and its dependencies. That means that you might have to use a wired connection, i.e. a LAN cable". Cheeky.

Scrolling down to their Testimonials, the photo of Network Administrator David Allen has also been used under dozens of names elsewhere.

Ok, now it seems clear to me that I won't have p2p support by the ath11k driver in a near future... and buying an external dongle just to have this feature working isn't appealing to me. The point in buying a 4k laptop is not to spend more and have a mess of things to carry around!

I'm not resignign yet though!

I've found on this page that on my laptop wifi is reported as working using the iwlwifi driver.
iwlwifi supports p2p modes as I'm using it on my older laptop without issues.
How do I select the driver that the kernel loads? Should I use another kernel version? If I blacklist the ath11k module will the kernel try to select another working one? Is there a way to hint the kernel on which modules to use?

A lot of questions, but I hope this is the right place to pose them.

Thank you!

More questions coming... How an Intel wifi driver is supposed to work with a Qualcomm hardware?

It isn't. Intel and Qualcomm each have their own proprietary methods for implementing wireless technologies. As long as the end results meet industry standards, it doesn't matter how each of them gets there.

Qualcomm's own ath9k driver is P2P-capable, yet there must be a reason why they haven't ported that code to their ath10k or ath11k drivers. I haven't seen the hardware data sheets, so I could only speculate that Qualcomm made non-trivial changes to the architecture of their chipsets.

Some XPS models shipped with Intel wifi. You could open your XPS and replace the Qualcomm wireless module with an Intel WiFi/Bluetooth module, such as the AX200. Then you can use the Intel iwlwifi driver, with no dongle. You may need a small PC toolkit, for precision screwdrivers etc.

I fear that replacing the wifi module may void my warranty so this is not an option right now.
I decided to subscribe to the ath11k development mailing list and ask there, and also offered to help if needed.

I'll report here if there are any news/developments about the subject.

Thank you!
