Problem with broadcom bcm4312

Post by ShexNivis »

Hello there,
my wireless used to work fine, but then one day it stopped working on my university, I thought it was something with their router on that day so didn't care about it but it never got back working so I tried on the windows and it worked fine.
I have tried reinstalling the driver with jockey-gtk but it didn't work. Now it won't work on any wireless, not even the one at my home which worked fine.
Is there anything I can do to try to fix it or will I have to reinstall mint and hope it will work?

Some info:
$ lspci | grep Network
0e:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)

The wireless works fine on windows so I don't think its a hardware problem. The network-manager shows the connections but when I click to connect to it, it takes a long time and it fails.

I will be more than glad to provide any info that can help.
Thank you for the time and for the help.
Shex~

Did you install some updates then this happed or did you install a program? Also it might help if it was kow which version for Mint you are using.

You have 2 choices in Jockey, one says something about fwcutter and the other STB which one did you try and install. STB is the corect one. If you do a new install make sure you install the updates before trying to install the broadcom driver.

Using mint isadora standard edition with all updates installed.
Sadly I'm not sure about a updating breaking it since it took me a while to realize the problem existed ; /
also the jockey just gave me one option which is the Broadcom B43 wireless driver("fwcutter is a tool which can extract firmware from various source files.It's written for BCM43xx driver files.")

also..
Is there any good alternative for network-manager that I could try?

Oh and here is some weird behavior. When I have eth0 connected wireless work.
I mean I have two ip right now. One for eth and one for wlan.
$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:26:b9:ad:4b:fa
inet addr:192.168.0.101 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
...
wlan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr c4:17:fe:84:55:4d
inet addr:192.168.0.102 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
...
according to network-manager I'm connected to 'oct 6' which is my home wireless network and the eth0 which is from cable of course.

but then when I disconnect the eth I lose the wireless too.
seriously I don't know what's going on.

Some people like wicd better than the standard network manager. My wireless shows as eth2

I would go into network connections/wireless and delete all the connections that show there and start over. The information in there may have gotten corupt.

same problem with wicd. Took forever to get an ip address and then error it was not possible to retrieve an ip address or however it is in the english version of it.
I will be very glad if anyone can give me a way to go from here. I really don't want to do a fresh install.
