Hardware key Fn+F2 causes system crash

Post by rdelreLM » Sat Nov 12, 2011 1:38 pm

I have the following problem :(

When the wireless is hard disabled by pressing Fn+F2, the operating system gets blocked
and there is no way out except restart by poweroff button
(Ctrl-Alt-F1, Esc, Ctrl-Break, Ctrl-C, Ctrl-D, Ctrl-Alt-Canc, new Fn-F2 and any other action from keyboard provide no help - the system appears to be completely dead).

The opposite way (hard enable wireless by pressing Fn+F2 if it is disabled) does work properly.

(Hardware: ASUS 1201K - including wireless device: Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe
Software: Linux Mint Katya)

I cannot understand what can be the reason for this behaviour.

Hya rle,

My best guess would be device power-management in the kernel.

You can troubleshoot this by looking at the file /var/log/syslog. Make sure you write down the time when you press Fn+F2. Then, after the reboot, check the syslog to see what happened, and post it here (use the brackets [ code][ /code] ,without spaces, to not flood the post!)

Please make sure you also mention the outcome of the following commands in your next post:

"sudo lspci" -> copy/paste how the OS sees your WiFi-card. In my case:

Code: Select all

0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100
"sudo grep iwlagn /var/log/syslog" -> copy/paste which driver the OS loads. In my case:

Code: Select all
