[SOLVED] wifi works for a while and then drops router

Post by lemieszek » Sun Nov 13, 2011 5:15 pm

hi all

I'd been using katya for a while on my dell XPS 502 for a while without a problem. after upgrading to Lisa RC, I'm having this weird issue with wifi. it connects alright and I'm able to use it for a while. but after a few minutes (anything from 1 to 5, not longer), my router just goes offline. it's a cisco linksys wrt120n, and it's been working flawlessly with all my other devices (windows pc, previous linuxmint installation, android smartphones). I've tried installing wicd and windows wireless drivers, to no avail (I restored everything afterwards).

wired networking (laptop - router) works perfectly and stable. I've run mintWifi and the results are below. connection was working when I ran it, but dropped when it got to the last line below. when it happens, the wireless led on the router starts blinking quite fast. restarting the router does the trick.

I've been searching for a while and haven't found anything useful. any ideas?

thanks.

edit: formatted and reinstalled lisa, this time connected through wire until the installation and all updates were done. to no avail. maybe I should go back to katya and wait for the final version...?

edit 2: just upgraded firmware from 1.0.05 to 1.0.06. too soon to change the subject to "solved', but I've been connected for longer than any time before...

edit 3: no deal. still having problems, and I've tried messing with a whole bunch of router configs...

edit 4: just updated to the latest kernel available on update manager (3.0.0.14) and the problem is definitely gone. it's a level 5 update for now, but haven't had any stability problems.

When does the connection stop working? Always, no matter what you do, it stops after a few minutes? Or does it stop when using mintwifi? I ask this because I noticed my connection also stopped when using mintwifi. I had to disconnect the connection and connect it again to make it start working.
Differences are I am on Katya and am using a wired connection.

always after a few minutes using wifi on my laptop. the drop during mintWifi might have been a coincidence, but it always drops after a few minutes. it didn't when I had katya, and wired connection to the same router doesn't drop at all either.

the curious thing about it is that it's not the connection that drops, it's the router. any other device loses connection as well. my computer is still able to detect other networks in range, but not mine. I have no alternative other than just resetting the router...

I'd think it's a router problem, but no other device and no other system has ever done that.

I've got the same problem but with my Julia. Connection drops sometimes...

there are some logs of disconnections, maybe it would be helpful to solve:

thanks kklspecial, but doesn't seem like the problems are related. in my case, it's not sometimes, it's inevitably after a couple of minutes. and it's not exactly the connection that drops, but the router altogether...

Yes, lemieszek, I have same problem as you... But I think my problem is more serious than you -- I drops after few minutes whatever Linux Mint versions I use, which include 11 12 debian...........

does your router drop as well? I mean, can you see it using your smartphone's wifi or something like that? can you still see other wireless networks on your computer? which router do you have?

Oh, I think I misunderstand some meanings of you. I mean, I still can use some other device suce as mobile phone to connect my wifi. Actually, I usually work at school, so I don't know anything about routers. My school have different kinds of wifi connections, include WPA Enterprise, WEP and no security. Whatever connections I use, the results are same.

I've just installed the stable version of Mint 12 (Lisa), and I'm having a similar problem to lanbo, I think. My wireless connection connects and works for a short while (less than 1 minute) and then the connection stops working. The network manager still shows "connected" (and all other devices connected to the router are fine), but no outbound connection is possible (pinging google just times out, for example). Same hardware and config working successfully here (LMDE, which will continue to be my main distro), so I'm not sure what's up. I have no access to a wired network right now, so my Mint 12 install is a bit goosed. Anyone got any suggestions?

hey wilo108.

I just tried something last night that seems to have worked. I'll do some more testing tonight and if I still have no problems I'll add [SOLVED] to the topic.

all I did was update to the latest kernel available on system update (3.0.0.14). it's a level 5 update so it might be unstable, but I haven't found any problems so far. and I've used my computer on wifi for about 1 hour without a single disconnection (while it happened once every no more than 5 minutes before). might have been a coincidence, so I'll do some more testing tonight, but it's looking good so far. haven't found any sort of problems with the new kernel so far. since your system isn't usable right now anyway, might be worth a shot. the trick would be to be able to download the whole update (37mb) during your minute or so of working connection...

Hi lemieszek -- thanks for the suggestion. Actually in the end I compiled a version of the Linux 3.1 kernel myself, and that works okay (downloaded the sources from my main LMDE install on the same machine). It's a little odd, though, since every version of the kernel (from 2.6.32 onwards) that I've used on this machine has worked just fine. In my case the problem turned out to be a wpa_supplicant timeout, but I'm not sure why this should be the case. Hopefully it was just a small issue with the way the original Mint 12 kernel was compiled which caused problems on my specific hardware (Centrino Ultimate-N 6300) and in my environment (I'm using a very large, very busy shared AP), and the update you speak of has fixed it.

thanks!

You can install a newer kernel with this how-to: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40185

@turro059 -- I suggest you try the Liquorix kernel [1]. It's a precompiled version of the Zen Kernel[2], and has a slightly different config. -- most people seem to find its a little snappier too. Of course, if it doesn't work for you, you can simply boot into your previous kernel by selecting it from the GRUB screen, and then remove it. There's a WebUpd8 post about it here: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/03/how-to-i ... el-in.html.

[2] http://zen-kernel.org/

[edit:] I've used this kernel under Mint 12, LMDE, and various versions of Ubuntu and other Debain-based distros in the past (inclunding #!, for example), and never had a problem on any hardware, including an ancient Via C7-M based netbook. Every time I've come away with the feeling that it was an improvement -- either a hardware issue (like yours) was resolved, or I felt I got better performance, or both.
