Create Hotspot failed

Post by <°==< »

HEllo,

I just installed Linux Mint 12 on my old laptop (give a second life) and would like to turn it into a wirless hotspot.
I went to Network Settings > Wireless > Use as hotspot and configured the hotspot but it failed to be created.

The log of /var/log/syslog

and to be sure

Code: Select all

$ sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/mintWifi.py

Mintwifi fails to detect the card type. Is it a USB dongle?

Please open a terminal and post the output of:

Code: Select all

inxi -N
In case you use a USB dongle and inxi -N doesn't detect it, please run lsusb and post the output.

No it's not USB (but maybe exotic card, it was a cheap asus laptop)

Code: Select all

$ inxi -N
Network:   Card-1 Atheros AR2413 802.11bg NIC driver ath5k
           Card-2 nVidia MCP51 Ethernet Controller driver forcedeth

It's an Atheros card. Atheros usually works very well on Linux. I don't know why this should cause problems.

For the "querying iwconfig" phase of mintwifi, it was maybe because I was not connected to any hotspot

You are part of the network named "\xC3\x9CberWifiOfZeDead" according to iwconfig, and you have received 751.9 kB of data that way according to ifconfig. So you must be connected to something - else you couldn't receive data.

I think we didn't understand each others, maybe I wasn't clear.
When I try to create a hotspot (Settings > Wireless > Use as hotspot), it just fails. I see a GNOME Shell notification the hotspot is created and like 3 sec later, I've another saying the connection has failed.

My first post was with the state of my computer just after that. Still connected on eth0 but nothing with wlan0.

Has you said my card (Atheros) is not recognized with MintWifi, I though it was maybe because I wasn't connected to any wireless network that the information was not accessible. I tried then to re-run the script when connected to my router (ÜberWifi - cool name isn't it? -, seems there is an encoding problem somewhere by the way). My third post is the result of the script while connected to the router, I though it may help...

(I don't have the laptop for the we but if you have any idea why it fails I'll try it on monday)

That Mintwifi does not detect the card type is not a problem at all. There is wlan0 in ifconfig and iwconfig.

This worked for me:
http://ericwamari.com/techpress/2011/11 ... i-hotspot/

The configure button is greyed out except when you press 'Use as Hotspot', so press it then hit 'Configure'.

See the fix at the bottom of the page.

Unfortunately, I have the same problem with my Mint too, but the link above is dead.
So, is there any way to fix it?

I even have the same network card.
