Thanks for your reply, anandrkris. But I tried that, and to no avail. And a second machine of mine now has the same problem, and it is not set for autologin. This has really shaken my confidence.

I'll give that a try when I get back home from work and see whether it does anything special. I've tried many other tricks. Right now I can just drop to console and enter startx to get into the desktop. David Valentine, you should try that if you need to get to your desktop. It's inconvenient but a temporary workaround suggested by someone.

Last night, I went into Synaptic Package Manager, searched for all packages having a version of 4.10.2, and tried to force the version back down to 4.95, the only version offered once the kubuntu repository is removed. But Synaptic Package Manager wasn't having any of that. It didn't do what I asked, but did give me a delay of a couple minutes to reflect upon the error of my ways.

Update (20:53 EST)

I tried dist-upgrade, and nothing was found to update. Kubuntu's repository had already brought over all the updates as of this moment (20:53 04-06-2013 EST). I rebooted and still get the same old login-loop, where I can drop to the console and startx in order to access my desktop. I really don't think there is going to be any solution for some machines, and my machine is one of them.

Of course, reinstalling is a solution, but all the major KDE distros are laying their golden eggs in the Spring, so it would seem boring to reinstall what will soon be an old version. I purchased a new hard drive yesterday, and when it arrives, I'm going to install the first major distro that releases a stable version in the KDE family, either Mageia or Kubuntu. Both are getting close to their release date. Kubuntu seems more attractive to me, now that it has a new sponsor in Blue Systems. Last night I torrented Mageia 3's fourth beta and burned the .ISO to a DVD, so I may go ahead and try that out. I poked around in Mageia's installer yesterday, but didn't have enough confidence in it to install to a hard drive with preexisting data.

Thanks for that suggestion, Igor. That did allow me to access my desktop. Now I'm just wondering how long I will just have to limp along like this. :|

Never fear! Kubuntu 13.04 is due to be released April 25th, 2013. I, for one, can limp along from GUI to console to GUI for just eighteen more days. Then I'll install Kubuntu, see whether I like the new version, and use it to at least tide me over until Linux Mint 15 KDE. I didn't much care for the previous versions of Kubuntu and felt that Linux Mint KDE was much better out-of-the-box. But you know, there is always the possibility that Kubuntu's developers have a freer hand since Canonical cut them loose, and now that their employer is Blue Systems, a philanthropic company that doesn't seem too eager for profit. There is the possibility Kubuntu 13.04 will be more of what the users want it to be. So color me curious.

I'm also tempted to put Xubuntu 13.04 on my htpc, but I decided this morning not to do that. The fact of the matter is that Linux Mint 14 Xfce is just completely awesome in that role, and I don't know what could possibily be gained by an upgrade except the nerdy satisfaction of a greater version number, which I have become aware I need to fight against--such a destructive impulse. I've customized LM 14 Xfce to such an extent that it works pretty much flawlessly and boots in eighteen seconds, so I have no complaints. I think that I can manage manual upgrades as far as VLC is concerned, but VLC doesn't release new versions often.

Yep loving Mint KDE but like you also waiting for Mint Cinnamon 15 to give a whirl as love Cinnamon.

But what are the major differences on Kubuntu vs Mint KDE?
As never installed Kubuntu only Untiy 12.10.

This worked for me. I only had the issue on one of my three machines. Thank you for the tip. I just went to a console log in from the infinite loop (log in) screen and issued the
'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' command.

I have 4 users on each of my 3 machines. On the one machine where I experienced the looping I did the "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" for a user that has admin privileges. A number of packages were updated. That allowed that user and 2 w/o admin privileges to login. The 4th user who also has admin privileges still could not login. I logged that user in via console, issued the apt-get command, and 0 packages were found. I then changed the login screen mode from KDE Plasma Workspace (failsafe) to KDE Plasma Workspace and then that user was able to login. I do not know why that made a difference. Just thought I would mention what I had to go through to get things working again.

I actually torrented the 03-2013 release of LMDE Cinnamon, burned a dvd not an hour ago, and plan to overwrite my now-buggy LM 14 KDE install tonight and give Cinnamon a whirl. You know, one positive aspect about Cinnamon is, being based on Gnome, in theory at least Firefox may load a trifle faster, as it too is Gnome-based. But I don't know, just speculation on my part. I have felt that KDE was rather sluggish on my desktop so maybe I will prefer LMDE Cinnamon, although I wonder whether printing will be quite so easy to set up without Ubuntu. I am dreading the printer setup.

Kubuntu just had some odd design choices back in 12.04 and 12.10, it seemed to me, whereas Linux Mint KDE was much better-designed. That is the basic reason we are here instead of over on the Ubuntu forum. Also, Linux Mint KDE saved me a lot of time in terms of apps and other useful things being already installed. You know, I find that I do prefer Synaptic to Ubuntu's software manager, which is slower loading, so I think Synaptic is another advantage in Linux Mint. There were annoyances in Kubuntu which I forget now, so much time having passed since I last tried it. I keep an open mind however and am curious about Kubuntu 13.04, especially since there has been a regime change, with the developers now being shod of Canonical. Kubuntu and Xubuntu are both more or less independent, or so it would seem. All the usual Ubuntu flavors are releasing their 13.04 on April 25th of this year. For people wrestling with the infinite login loop problem, it makes sense to consider installing the latest flavor of Kubuntu and see whether it's tolerable. I'd rather do that than go back to the same old version with nothing gained for my trouble.

Aha! The one missing element to my solution! My desktop is fixed thanks to blue_bullet!

I was skeptical after having tried so many things that didn't work. I now know what the solution is. All of the things people suggest are accurate, and I'd list them here if I remembered 'em. However, for some desktops, like mine, it will be necessary at the infinite-login-screen-loop to click on the dropdown menu and change the desktop from (Default) to KDE Plasma Workspace. When I did that, KDE logged in automatically. After reboot, it did so again. That means it is fixed!

Yippee! Yahoo!

Google?

Try the above, David, and see whether it works for you as well, assuming you've already done sudo apt-get update and upgrade and all that jazz.

Update: Just for fun, I powered-off, then restarted the computer, and Linux Mint KDE 4.10.2 booted automatically and brought me to my desktop. Such a relief. Not sure I'm going to do any more updates prior to Linux Mint 15 KDE's release.

Thanks for the idea, Igor. I think one of my machines resolved via the dist-upgrade, or something--I'm not sure exactly why the boot loop suddenly disappeared. On the first machine, I tried switching from kdm to lightdm, and voila, that machine happily autologs me in again.

Groovy! So as far as I know everyone's okay.

Hi I have the same problem after updating the system. I was following the instructions everyone mentioned, but when I attempted to install kde-workspace I got an unmet dependencies for kde-window-manager and said I had broken package. When I was trying to install kde-window-manager I am missing many other dependancies: libegl1-mesa, libegl1-x11, libkwinglesutils1,libkwinglutils1abi2, lunchbox-image0lunchbox-image0.
Help, what should I do now? Thank you.
