how to login as root in kde rosa

Post by reverseeng » Sat Jan 30, 2016 6:09 pm

hi,

installed linux Mint for the first time. This is also the first time I can't login as root.
Anyone who can tell what config file to change?

tnx in advance.

Reason: Mint 17.3 is nick-named Rosa, not roas

It's not the answer you want to hear, but you should not log yourself as root. This is dangerous. If you need to have admin privileges to perform an action, please use su or sudo to acquire temporarily your privileges.

If you really want to log as root, please use the search function of this board to see if the question has ever been answered, or use Google. Don't expect people to help your destroying your system.
If it ain't broke, fix it until it is.

Maybe you can tell us why you need to log into the desktop as root.

So far, in 20+ years, no one has come up with a good reason...

As a few people have suggested, logging in to the desktop as root is dangerous and I can't think of any reason to do it.

But if you need to do it for some weird reason, the simplest way should be to do it through the MDM login screen.

Open System Settings.

Right at the bottom is an option for MDM Login manager. It will ask for your password.
When the Preferences window opens, choose the bottom icon in the left pane 'Options'

The 4th item down is to 'Allow root login'

I still think it is a crazy idea - but once you log out you should see the option to log in as Root.

Get ready for the volley of:
"Black screen at boot"
"X won't start"
"Urgent I bricked my system"
and
"How to re-install"
questions ;)

Just what I was thinking more or less  .

In larger unix/linux installations that have a real tech support IT department, typically the only user who can log in as root is the sysadmin. Does this tell you anything?

Bottom line is: if you can't even figure out how to log in as root, don't even think about it. I've been using ubuntu/mint for years. I don't have any Windows partitions anymore. And I've never logged in as root.

I think everyone should be warned NOT to log in as root.

Then they should learn to log in to the desktop as root.

That way they learn NEVER to do it again...

I converted my business computers to Linux in 1998 when Red Hat finally became usable for every day work. I had all my best customers / clients converted to Linux by 2001. I still can't see any good reason to log in to the desktop as root.

But it is possible, and the OP did ask. The OP wrote that he/she was used to logging in as root in their previous Linux distros. And the forum is usually here to answer questions. And I had just had to fix something in MDM and noticed the option was there.

But the warning still stands. Just because it is possible to drive your car from outside, with a brick on the throttle and steering through the window - you should never do it.

Same goes for logging in to a desktop as root - and the results are about as predictable. Advice for any new Linux user, and for most old Linux users is "If you plan to log in as root, do it from a terminal."

If you encounter a situation where you think su, sudo, or gksudo will not accomplish what you want, don't hesitate to ask. Those will work - you just have to learn how to use them.

As I said before, if you have to ask don't go there. Or at the very least have a fresh backup of your /home folder. And if you don't mind making your Linux less secure than Windows ...

worst thing: The computer does not more belong to you, but to an attacker, who will be happy, that he can do with your system whatever he wants.

ah so its like.....

( root )
(||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| no root |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||)
each line symbolizing a wall of protection
?

little bit like how a ship is built with lots of small areas so if 1 floods they all dont but going root opens all the internal hatches so ship goes down at 1 flood.?

but that begs the question.... the sudo pass is the same for them all? if you guess it or crack it you have full access anyway?

Since the original poster hasn't responded in almost 5 months I'm guessing he's gone to PCLinuxOS where the mere mention of sudo sends you to the Texas equivalent of the guillotine.
