Desktop effects not working Linux Mint 18 KDE

Post by Max17 »

I have notice a few things that are going on with this problem. First off, when I click top install Wobbly Windows and the Desktop Cube they do not work when I select the Screen Edges. I did make sure that the compositor is enabled. The compositor is set to OpenGL 2.0. When It is set to Xrenderer the hot corners work; but the cube does not work. Secondly, sometimes when I tick the Desktop Effects in the submenu Desktop Behavior, System Settings window will crash.

I'm not sure if this is related to my computer; but I thought I should report it. My computer is running the Intel Pentium Dual Core CPU E2200 @ 2.2GHz 4GIB RAM 64-bit.

Thank you, :)

It may be your graphics system. To find out about your system, please use the following terminal command, and copy/paste the complete output back here in a reply.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Well, I was away too . . :?

Yes, your graphics system is a little on the light side for the graphics intensive KDE desktop. You may want to try disabling some of the desktop effects, or try upgrading your Linux kernel (Kernel: 4.4.0-21) to the 4.4.0_34 version. I don't know if it will help or not.
The only other suggestion is to try the Mate or Xfce desktop versions.
Good luck,

You can try:
Settings->Display and Monitor-> Compositor

to use OpenGL 3.1

This will enable more effects.

The OP has an Intel G33 card, which is almost 10 years old and only supports OpenGL 2.1. So don't bother doing that.

Hardware accel is set to SNA by default and that can be a problem with old Intel video cards. Try this to switch it to UXA:

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php ... st12821558

Definitely call the file 20-intel.conf, and you'll need a simple text editor to create it. I don't know what the default simple editor is in any Mint DE versions because I always use leafpad. It's fast, small, doesn't choke on big files, doesn't come with dependencies, and I like the interface.

Just navigate to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ with your file manager (hit "file system" first) and right click on the open pane rather than any files. You should see an option saying "open in terminal" or similar. Then in terminal enter (with the name of your simple editor):

kdesudo <your editor> 20-intel.conf

and copy/paste from the above link.

That may help, but I also suspect richyrich may be right ... the compositing effects may not work properly on your video card. I always turn off that stuff anyway, even opn mopre powerful hardware.

I'd also suggest any KDE user join their forum:

^ Missed that (like I originally missed the Monitor/Display setting)
Thanks for the clarification.

I may have the same issue. It's hard to tell. I'm in Settings on the Desktop Effects page. The cool-sounding effects listed there do not include information about how to invoke the effect. For each effect there's a red icon that in some cases starts an uninformative low-res video. (The other two icons do nothing.)

Example: Zoom. The video shows the effect, but not HOW to invoke it. Also true of Looking Glass.

But does OpenGL 3.1 work on your hardware?

Hi "Max17",

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

I have an older Intel Core2 Duo E8400, Intel 4 Series Integrated Graphics Controller that only supports openGL 2.x, and all the effects work, but only with these settings:

Compositing Type: OpenGL 2.0

QT Graphics System: Raster

Obviously hit Apply after any changes....

These settings are in the System Settings -> Display-> Compositor option in Linux Mint KDE 18.x

These settings are in the System Settings -> Desktop Effects -> Advanced tab option in Linux Mint KDE 17.x

Hope this helps ...

Just as well, that was a bad idea anyway.
