Firefox and Thunderbird with KDE Plasma 5 enhancements

Post by phd21 »

Hello KDE users,

Did you know there are Firefox and Thunderbird with KDE Plasma 5 enhancements available?

They call it "plasmazilla".

Installing firefox-plasma/thunderbird-plasma you will get:
* Native file saving/opening dialog
* Application bindings

https://launchpad.net/~plasmazilla/+arc ... u/releases

Update 09-06-2017 06:42pm US Eastern DST

It works! I now have the "Kdialog" in Firefox too, and more

To install Firefox for Plasma and Thunderbird for Plasma using the PPA method, open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste (or Shift+Insert), repeat for each command.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:plasmazilla/releases

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firefox-plasma thunderbird-plasma

Note: In my system it would not install Firefox for Plasma because it conflicted with "hunspell-en-us" package that I installed, apparently it is included in this package. I removed "hunspell-en-us" package from "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)", and it installed perfectly.

+ Add-on: Plasma Integration 0.0.3 Compatible with Firefox 57+
Provides better integration with the KDE Plasma 5 desktop.
You MUST install plasma-browser-integration for this package to work
- works after installing Firefox for Plasma

Hello phd21,

I tried to install with

sudo apt-get install firefox-plasma thunderbird-plasma

But I get the following message in terminal:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
firefox-plasma : Depends: firefox (= 1:56.0+build6-0ubuntu0.17.04.1) but 56.0+linuxmint1+sonya is to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Any ideas of what to do to allow the firefox install? I do have firefox 56.0 installed already.

Here is my inxi:

Hi "Sgthawker", and Anyone Else Interested in this,

Sorry for the late reply. I had to re-install my systems...

If you have a problem installing this like you have, follow the intructions below.

If you download the firefox version for this from the link below and install it first, then you can run the command below to install the Plasma version of Firefox below. Don't forget to install the Firefox Plasma Integration add-on afterwards and restart Firefox. There is also a KDE Connect browser add-on for those who have an Android phone.

"Sgthawker" your system is 64-bit, so use the 64-bit download.

64-bit Firefox Linux deb file, just save somewhere and double click to install it.
https://launchpad.net/~plasmazilla/+arc ... _amd64.deb

32-bit Firefox Linux deb file, just save somewhere and double click to install it.
https://launchpad.net/~plasmazilla/+arc ... 1_i386.deb

Then, run the command below to install the Firefox Plasma version.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install firefox-plasma thunderbird-plasma

Hope this helps ...

Hi "Sgthawker",

You are welcome.

I think it is pretty cool that there are versions of browsers and add-ons specifically enhanced for the KDE plasma desktops.
