ZIP broken when using dolphin

Postby oligalma » Fri Oct 20, 2017 6:28 pm

I use Linux Mint 17.3. I was able to zip files using dolphin in the past (Compress > As ZIP archive), but not anymore. If I zip files in this way, they end up broken. If check the consistency I get this error:

Code: Select all

marc@marc-desktop:~/Desktop/New Folder > zip -T file.zip
zip warning: missing end signature--probably not a zip file (did you
zip warning: remember to use binary mode when you transferred it?)
zip warning: (if you are trying to read a damaged archive try -F)

zip error: Zip file structure invalid (file.zip)

However, when I zip files using the command line, it works well.

What's happening here? I don't know why it worked in the past but not now.

I just tested this here in Mint 18.2 and if I try to create a zip file via the "Compress, Here (as ZIP)" in Dolphin it causes Ark to crash with a segmentation fault every time.

I'm guessing there is something broken in the way Dolphin is calling the Ark tool.
Running Mint 18.2 KDE and Kubuntu 14.04 on Intel Core-i5-4670 (3.4GHz), 16Gb Mem, 128Gb SSD, 2Tb HDD.

Wrong guess.

Even in standalone mode, ark is rubbish.

kde ark crash
About 216,000 results (0.68 seconds)

KDE Dolphin crash
About 289,000 results (0.50 seconds)

So, what does that prove?

Catweazel, you're not being very helpful.

Actually 149 results, including results for "Ark Of The Covenant", and e.g. a motorcycle crash.

My free advice is try "file-roller" if the standard dolphin archiver is messing up.
PS: Your "zip -T" command worked fine here.

I can cheat better. Zero, zilch, nada.

My search wasn't cheating at all because without the quotes on each word (e.g. "ark") the search results don't necessarily contain all the search terms.

But the main point is: the initial "About XXX results" that google returns is almost always 1,000 to 10,000 times as large as the actual number of webpages that it - or you - can actually find.

("kde" "ark" "crash") --> "About 31,400 results" -> but (just now) only 102 actual results if you go to page 11.

I'd guess the inflated number is a marketing tactic - "look at all the information we have!"

I've just checked and It seems that this software is not available for KDE desktop.

It should be installable ... just do

Code: Select all

sudo apt install file-roller
in the terminal. Although, I wouldn't do that myself as I'm biased and prefer not to install anything Gnome based in my pristine KDE desktop if I can possibly use a native KDE app instead.

As far as file managers go, I prefer Krusader over Dolphin any day. Dolphin is good but Krusader is much better IMHO. Check it out. BTW, the Zip functions work just fine in Krusader.
