KDE 5.8 support post April 2016?

Post by Jedinovice »

[Sorry if I am being dumb and not spotting the obvious... or if I am posting in the wrong place. So very tired from the process of setting up my business this year. It will settle down next year.]

Linux Mint KDE runs KDE 5.6 to LTS 5.8 Greeeaaatt! I like LTS.

But support for 5.8 ends next year. What then? Does KDE get a back port upgrade? Does Mint take on LTS support what happens? Do we have to upgrade to a later rendering of Mint, like 5.12? Given I use Mint KDE for my business across a wad of laptops now I kinda like settling on one version. I remember that Mint 13 ran on 4.8 forever but backports were not enabled by default back then.

The last point release of the KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS desktop environment will be KDE Plasma 5.8.9 LTS, which is expected to land in six months from the moment of writing this story, on April 10, 2018, marking the end of life of KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS. But, until then, you'll be able to upgrade to a newer LTS release, KDE Plasma 5.12.
Thanks. Sooo tired. Been getting my Visa renewed. Typing in a hotel in between sleep.

All Linux Mint 18.x KDE releases use the Kubuntu backports PPA by default. The Kubuntu maintainers provide 3 years of support (till April 2019). Whether they will provide a further upgrade of Plasma on the 16.04 package base or not, I don't know. In any case, regardless what upstream (KDE developers) does the Kubuntu maintainers do the actual support and releases of fixes for the KDE software on Linux Mint 18.x.

In short, you can use Linux Mint 18.x KDE worry free till April 2019.

Brill. Thanks for that Xenopeek. I actually want to stay on 5.8! While I do use the power of KDE I don't need all the bells and whistles
and I don't want any more overhead from the OS, especially with the limited power hardware I am forced to use/choose to use. And, stability is a good thing in a business.

I mean.. I am still using Mint 18.0 because I dare not upgrade! No time if it goes wrong. You can tell how busy I am this year but the relative absence of AMV announcements here. My spare time tends to be spent asleep.
Having said all that... my visa renewal process is nearly over and will be for much longer than the 1 year at a time system I used to be on. (Advantages of setting up my own business here.) Also, thanks to finally getting my UK windfall I have managed to buy one last laptop needed for the business which I am configuring. With that in place I have backups and I can risk trying an upgrade. Aptik also helps with a re-install if necessary!

Anyway, good to know I can standardise. Since Kdenlive will run on Mint 18 for ages I doubt I will be touching 19 unless Kubuntu cease support for KDE 5.8. Will see. Eighteen months helps.

Thanks again Xenopeek. I'll mark this as solved, though it ws more an inquiry than a problem.

Just to be clear, I meant the Kubuntu backports PPA maintainers may or may not make Plasma version higher than 5.8 available on the package based used by Linux Mint 18.x. I don't have a definitive answer whether till Arpil 2019 the Kubuntu backports PPA will stay on Plasma 5.8.

OK. Fair comment. That makes things clearer/
As I say, I remember 4.8 on Mint 13 was supposed right to end of life so I am kinda assuming. :D

At the moment, it's much more likely to be a 'may not'.

Well, Kubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic Beaver (/me shudders at the name) would be the natural move. That should come with 5.12 LTS Plasma.

However, the great thing about the Linux ecosystem is that there are many wonderful alternatives. :)
