I have been happily running Linux Mint KDE 17.3 on a Core i7 with a GTX 660 for some years now on twin monitors both with 1920x1080 graphics. Yesterday it updated the kernel to 4.4.0-109-generic and now the only graphics mode that I have is 640 x 480 on one monitor.
How do I get the other graphics modes back?

It's actually fairly common for kernel updates to break something, and you'll have to boot to the previous kernel. I'm seeing lots of these reports lately.

I checked for updates today and it updated kernel 4.4.0 to 4.4.0-lts1 and the Nvidia X Server burst back into life.
