(SOLVED) Where does KDE store screen settings (Screen Tearing issue)
I've been having a terrible time with screen tearing in KDE. One of the things I tried was to set tearing prevention to "reuse screen content", well that made my desktop unusable, I had been using Timeshift to create backups so I thought I could just run Timeshift from terminal Ctrl-Alt-F2, but timeshift does not restore the screen setting file I screwed up. So 2 questions, 1) Can I delete the settings file and have KDE recreate a stock settings file with the screen tearing option reset? 2) If this is possible where is this file?

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.
It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" and "lsusb" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Thank you for your replys, sorry about the delay as work got real crazy there for a bit. I found the kwinrc and set up a test user to see if I could fix it from vi in a terminal and I could. I wonder why Timeshift doesn't restore a copy of kwinrc on a restore.

Do you have a separate /home partition and just back up your / (root) partition? User settings are stored in /home.
Screen tearing tends to be desktop agnostic so KDE settings aren't necessarily the way to go. But that's a legacy AMD card (the open source driver (radeon) is your only driver available) so you may want to try disabling all desktop effects / animations / eye candy in KDE settings.

I seem to remember having no issues until I installed conky aureola.

I suspect that's it. It isn't meant for KDE, and I wouldn't install a 3rd party app like that even in a GTK based DE.

https://community.linuxmint.com/software/view/timeshift indicates it only takes snapshots of your system, not of your home partition.

I'm typing this on my 17.3 Xfce netbook but my main laptop runs 18.2 KDE. And I avoid 3rd party customizattions in Plasma 5 like the plague. Even the themes that come up in legitimate lists for Plasma 5 aren't reliable.
My version of a conky (in both Xfce and KDE) is just a vertical auto hide panel on the side. I just put app launchers there. Much simpler and more reliable.

I would have no problems with screen tearing until I ran conky,even that would take a few days/sessions to start manifesting itself. I changed my desktop session in startup/shutdown to "start with an empty session" and now I don't have any issues with screen tearing any more, I'm thinking there were two instances of conky running and because they exactly overlayed each other it was not possible to see this and this would increase by one every new session.

Sure enough, with screen edge set to Desktop Grid every window would be shown as separate and I would see one more conky running on every new session. So now I'm no longer having any issues with screen tearing.
