Mint 18.2 KDE never shuts down properly and freezes frequently

Post by funinthesun »

Since I was never able to resolve this issue with 17.3 KDE I decided to upgrade to mint 18.2, with all the attendant hassles. I hoped that 18.2 would somehow fix this but in fact it is much worse than previously. Now Mint 18.2 KDE will never shut down properly, it freezes frequently and now KDE hangs on occasion.
Here is a selection from the log files immediately prior to the last freeze up. I was just going along prettily with Facebook when it froze with no warning. It appears that there may be some problem with Bind but I don't understand what. I was concered that maybe I had a hardware issue but I can boot to WIndows and use the computer and it does not freeze. I can also boot to a flash drive with Mint 16 CInnamon and it works just fine, so I have discounted a hardware problem
Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong and how to fix this problem? I would prefer to continue to use KDE but feel there is something centrally wrong with the Mint KDE port.

<moderator on>
Thread split off from the Mint 17 thread, Firefox causing Mint 17 to freeze. Reason: different Mint version, 17 vs. 18. No hint the reported issue may be related to Firefox like asumed, but never confirmed in the old thread.

Hello, funinthesun.

Please, open a terminal window. Execute the commandline
inxi -Fxz
Mark the complete screen output which inxi writes into the terminal window and paste it into your next reply.
(Please, no hardly readable screenshot like in your old thread.)
inxi produces text only, so it can be marked, copied and pasted as text.

Best regards,
Karl

Internet search on
"Comm: plugin-containe Tainted:"
seems to indicate that it's a flash-player (+video driver?) problem. Try turning off flash...

Edit: "plugin-containe Tainted" was from
viewtopic.php?f=56&t=188583
which pointed to this post...same problem?
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

You do need to post the results of inxi -Fxz.

However, if that's the same machine as in this post of yours (viewtopic.php?f=59&t=218451&p=1149327#p1147944), you're dealing with a 2004 model with one of the worst supported video cards for Linux. There aren't any proper Linux drivers available and I'm not surprised you couldn't get it running properly in 17.3. The line in that inxi ouput that says "Direct Rendering: N/A" is a dead giveaway. If it doesn't say yes there, you have zero 3D hardware video acceleration.

Unfortunately, in Linux hardware support updates in newer releases are almost always for new hardware, not old stuff. So it is much more likely that a new release will work worse, not better.

Sorry I don';t have better news, if that's the same machine. All I can suggest really is to turn off ALL display compositing and use light apps to play video.

I just put 18.3 KDE on a newly acquired used Lenovo Thinkcentre desktop and had the same issue - could not shut down.
What worked for me was to go into BIOS>Power Setting and Disable "Wake on LAN Settings"
My theory is that this Lenovo was on a corporate network and therefore "Wake on LAN Settings" was enabled.
Perhaps your computer was on a network at some point?

This is the inxi -Fxz output. How do I turn off the compositing if that is the problem. Oddly enough I tried Cinnamon 16.1 from a flash drive and it appeared to work fine. Is it a problem specific to KDE or would I have the same issue with other desktops?

My Mint 19 with Plasma 5 also sometimes freezes for a long while when shutting down. Other times it shuts down quickly. I have found that it never seems to freeze if I open Dolphin before shutting down, and right click and choose 'safely remove' for any mounted external USB drives.

This is probably not your problem, but if you do have USB drives mounted, it might be worth trying to see if it makes a difference. I don;t have to unplug the drives - simply unmount them with 'safely remove'.
