VLC not opening

Post by photek »

Hi

Just installed the new Mint 7 KDE CE
Everything went nice and dandy but... my beloved VLC won't open
It's VLC 1.0 , i tried with an older version too no luck
I ve been using Mint the Gnome edition and it was working just fine

Now i see something in the taskbar for few seconds and then disappears whithout doing anything
It's a brand new install, fresh, clean slate

Can anyone point me into the right direction please.
Appreciate it!

Hi,
Can you open a terminal and type vlc , then hit enter.

What error messages in the terminal ?

Here it is :

VLC media player 1.0.1 Goldeneye
[0x9f5a140] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
Segmentation fault

Typing cvlc gives me :

VLC media player 1.0.1 Goldeneye
[0x8fa1298] dummy interface: using the dummy interface module...
Segmentation fault

By searching through the VLC Forum,
You may have artifacts left over from 0.9.9, open Synaptic and type vlc in the search bar, is there anything left from your previous version? if so, un-install.

Make sure you have libdvdcss2 and libdvdread4 installed. (Synaptic)

Another thing, was to clear the cache & config files before doing the upgrade: ~/.cache/vlc , ~/.config/vlc

http://forum.videolan.org/index.php ( they can explain it much better than me - just search for "segmentation")

I ended up removing it and reinstalling.
Along with this i thought it would be a good idea to install the video drivers(nvidia)
After rebooting i was staring at a white and gray checkered screen where i couldn't do anything
Did i mention i didn't have any sound?

3 hrs later and 2 smashed keyboards :-) i finally got my screen and my VLC back
The sound is still spotty. Now working later not.No error messages in any of the logs.Gotta dig a bit deeper.Didn't have time

Thank You for your help!!

Glad you got it working. . . hmmm, audio . . .
Open a terminal and type lspci, hit enter , and aplay -l (small case L), enter, can you then post the two outputs back here?

OK

i really wanted to try KDE 4.X
I was hoping it got better from the last time i tried (when it came out)
Total disaster, and i'm talking obviously from my own experience

From the moment i installed it : sound working ...now and then, video crashed (yes it gave me blackouts!) no idea why, never happened ,the plasmoids(widgets) crashed whenever i was expecting the least, the system overall felt sluggish, unresponsive.Monitoring the system showed strange processor behaviour bouncing from idle 9%- 15% to 80- 90 whithout using anyting. ??!!!

Put back my trusted Gloria x64 and it feels like i got back home :-)

No bashing intended really, i know some people here spent a boatload of time on this release to make it happen but i don't think it's their fault. It's just KDE 4.x that is not quite ready for the masses (or at least not for me :-) )

Thank you rich for your kind support !
