Broadcom STA will not activate

Post by GenomeJB »

I installed LinuxMint -gnome version 2 weeks ago, and the Broadcom STA was recognized and installed automatically.
Today I installed LinuxMint-KDE-8.0 on another hard drive, and have spent the day trying to get wireless working-to no avail. The Broadcom STA will not activate. The error log is long, but the part about the STA is this:

How come I cannot activate the driver?

Thanks

What if you install WICD and got rid of the KDE4 network manager?

I will try that and let you know. Thanks.

I also apologize for not searching the internet for complaints about this problem, as is recommended before posting to this forum. It appears that quite a few users have had this problem with Ubuntu installs. I have not yet tried suggestions from others on how to solve the problem.

One of my laptops require the broadcom STA driver as well & on some distros ( mostly the ones that do not have the package included on the live disc )
I end up having to hardwire in the LAN & then attempt the driver install , sometimes this takes a few reboots after the Linux Install for the hardware to be reconized & then it allows me to search for the driver & install.Just my exp on the issue, hope this helps,

This is an update to my previous, and original, post.
I just totally reinstalled LinuxMint-KDE-8.0 and managed to get wireless working. Here is what happened:
When the new install was completed I first updated the installation (192 files updated). I noticed the "Hardware Drivers" icon in the lower right, and after updating I clicked on it. Two drivers appear on my computer, Broadcom B43 driver, which was highlighted, and below that the Broadcom STA driver. I could not move down to select the STA driver, however. I also could not close the driver screen or for that matter do anything else on the computer; it was frozen with the B43 driver highlighted. (On the first install I had clicked on the first driver, which did not install properly). So I turned the computer off manually, and when it came back up the "Hardware Driver" icon no longer appeared; I waited a long time for it to do so. I then clicked on System and selected Hardware Driver, and that brought up the driver selection screen. This time I was able to select the STA driver, and when I clicked on "Activate" it downloaded and installed the driver. I closed the screen and tried to restart the computer, as recommended to get the driver to work, but the computer would not restart. I again turned it off manually and restarted it. This time, the networking icon showed the wired and wireless connections, and I was able to select wireless by entering the security password for the connection. I still had the wireless connection when I disconnected the wired cable. The computer is now in a distant room and the wireless is again working fine.

On the first installation it did not help to install the WICD network manager.

I believe there is a bug in the LinuxMint KDE program regarding the B43 driver, as I did not have any such problem with wireless when I installed the Gnome version 2-3 weeks ago.

The bug is not limited to Linux Mint or KDE it has to do with the Kernel and Broadcom drivers. You can find this same problem on nearly every distro. The problem is, who do you turn the bug in to?

Starts with the kernel devs so I'd turn it in there.
