Isadora KDE Development Progress Report

Post by Boo »

I will try to keep everyone updated on my progress on Isadora KDE here.

28-03-2010.
Installed Kubuntu 10.04 Beta1, applied 250+ updates.
built initial Isadora packages for:
mint-info-kde (working)
mint-meta-kde (dependancy hell already lol)

06-04-2010
pleanty of 10.04 updates.
some progress on mint kde plymoth theme.
Side tracked abit: Installed Mythbuntu 10.04 Beta1 on my mythbox. It is cool. Mythtv has been a side project of mine for the last 6 months.
Ate the wrong thing and needed a few days off to recover.

04-05-2010
well it has been a while, kubuntu is out and aren't the bug reports and release notes interesting.
work has been crazy so im a bit behind but clem has the Main at RC stage which always helps.
back to bussiness tonight.

12-05-2010
the mint KDE packages are coming along.
the meta package should now have all the packages to be added.
mintwelcome needs fixing for KDE.
plymouth is not behaving as expected.
being sick slows things down.

15-05-2010
built my first mint KDE iso.

16-05-2010
Built a few more ISO's.

18-05-2010
another iso and package fun.

23-05-2010
Gave up on qtscript creation of default desktop, back to a config file.
New iso created, installed on VM, looks good, Start to run mint tests tonight.

24-05-2010
OOPS i forgot to update to KDE 4.4.3 from the kubuntu ppa repo.

26-05-2010
testing ISO, uploaded to other devs for testing and fixes.
updated mint-meta-kde and created a new mint-meta-kde-extras to be a kde-full-find-any-other-cool-stuff...lol

29-05-2010
waiting for feedback for other devs and clem.
made some minor tweaks and updates.
the medibuntu and removed repos seem to disappear at times, which is annoying.

30-05-2010
uploaded latest iso last night.
Clem is now downloading, testing will shortly begin.

01-06-2010
A couple of things to fix, plymouth theme, mintwelcome, apparmor.
But you will be happy to know that KDE 4.4.4 in now in the ppa repo.

03-06-2010
New iso with KDE 4.4.4 and most fixes, now only mintWelcome to fix for KDE4.

04-06-2010
Uploaded new ISO for testing. clem has it.
exploder has given it the OK. clem will check it over the weekend.
It could be up by early next week.

09-06-2010
Clem has finished testing. We just want to tweak a few theme issues.
made fixes. Building ISOs and testing myself.
Uploading ISO for testing by devs.

10-06-2010
Clem has the ISO for testing.

13-06-2010
A few new fixes to do. mostly done.

Hi Boo,

Can't wait to see what you do with it. I'm looking forward to it.

Altough I'm reluctant to change anything now as I'm very pleased with LM8 KDE. I've had some problems and a few crashes but overall a very good job...

Thank you for your time and effort.

Cheers

Hi Boo and thanks for the wonderful work that you and the team do.

It would be nice if you could add KDVDRam-Tools in Synaptic, would be greatly appreciated by me and i think many others that use WR-Disc's.

I know that you have a lot on your plate, but thought that i will ask.

Boo, do you have a rough estimate on how long before your release? A lot of people have been asking me about switching them to linux, but I want to wait for your LTS release of linux mint KDE and want to know about what time frame you are thinking. I know you work really hard and I am not trying to rush you. Just wondering if your brilliant self has any idea. Thanks again for all your hard work. You are really awesome.

Hello Boo,

I was wondering how close you are to getting an RC version of LM9 KDE...Clem already has the RC out for Gnome. Although Gnome is very good, I'd like to test drive the KDE version...I personally like the widgets so I can closely view all the vitals of my laptop. In using Linux, I've noticed that my CPU temp is much lower as apposed to Windows, which is highly graphical in nature and uses a lot of resources. Let us know Boo, we're patiently waiting for your wonderful work on KDE. Have a great day.... :D

Usplash has been replaced by plymouth.
build mint-kde-plymouth-theme and found plymouth has a build bug so waiting for an update so I can test my theme.

Hey Boo,

I've been trying to work with the repos on your mint page...two things: 1) mint-meta-kde won't install, says that all dependencies haven't been met. 2) plymouth-theme-mint-kde is the same way....just thought I would pass that your way to help. Also?, after installing the others and then upgrading to KDE 4.4.3, upon reboot, all I get is the tty blackscreen, it won't go into login welcome or even back into Isadora once everything is updated. I don't know if it's a incompatibility between Isadora and KDE 4.4.3 or what...maybe something you could look into....I appreciate all your hard work and so far, Isadora looks great...let me know what you think..thanks Boo

KDE 4.4.3 is currently in the kubuntu ppa repo before it goes to the updates repo.
I would like to wait for it to be moved into the updates repo as there would be some extra fixes too.
Not so important for the RC but....

Hey Boo, following this procedure on a fresh, fully updated LM9 RC, it looks like KDM is failing to launch on reboot. Boot sticks on the splash screen and no errors show up in the console. Question: when we install mint-info-kde, it conflicts with mint-info-main, so should we remove mint-info-main or just force the install? I removed mint-info-main, and the rest of the install seemed to go smoothly, but then no KDM on reboot. Help?

thanks,
d

Hey Boo,

So you don't recommend upgrading to KDE 4.4.3 while playing with Isadora...reason for askig this is because it's usually afterward of upgrading to 4.4.3 that I get the black screen and tty. I'm currently using the Isadora right now, and it's pretty awsome...great work Boo...hope you're feeling better.

I'm not quite understanding this....is this all done in terminal or is there another way that some of this is done. I know some of it is, but I don't get the wget -q -O-http://archive.removed/removed-archive.key. Is there suppose to be an actual number where the # is before kubuntu?

Andrew,
The # symbol is standard unix shorthand to indicate that what comes next is just a comment, not a command or executable code. Boo was just indicating that the next line would add the kubuntu repos for KDE 4.4.3, which are optional and possibly even broken at this point. To add the archive key, you need to copy and paste the whole wget line into a terminal. Here's a cleaned up version of Boo's instructions (although they aren't giving me a working system yet); copy and paste each line into a terminal, running them individually. Before you start, download this file: http://packages.linuxmint.com/pool/main ... .0_all.deb . You'll be installing it in the first step, so make sure to save it in the same directory that you are working from in the terminal.

sudo dpkg -i mint-apt-config-kde_9.0.0_all.deb

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install linuxmint-keyring medibuntu-keyring

wget -q -O- http://archive.removed/removed-archive.key | sudo apt-key add -
