How many users can connect!

Post by laugwould » Mon May 03, 2010 9:41 pm

I have been all over the Internet and can't find the answer to what appears to be a very simple question.

Simply put... How many consecutive user sessions can connect to my Linux Mint desktop machine? I know that Windows XP Pro cuts off at like 10 consecutive sessions, what is Linux's cut off, is there one?

Thanks.

Assuming you are allowing them to login through SSH, you have to edit a certain config file. You should worry more about system resources than login limits for the most part.
Assuming you're using OpenSSH, you can limit unauthenticated connections with the MaxStartups directive in sshd_config.
If your situation permits, also use "PermitRootLogin no" and specify the users able to use SSH with "AllowUsers user1 user2 usern..."
For Idle Timeout, use the ClientAliveInterval and ClientAliveCountMax directives.
For more details:
"man sshd_config"

So fwc, am I correct to say as many as my resources would allow? In other words I am not hampered by a software limitation instituted into the system such as with windows XP or Vista?

That windows limit is probably only a business item for Microsoft, in that they sell their line of products with limited licenses for connections

--no doubt, they could offer more, depending on the horsepower of the machine.. and the client activity profiles..

Yes, and there are several styles of remote client connections methods available https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguid ... erver.html
--also really remote connections, such as web access..

--or gotomypc etc..

You will certainly want security, so an ssh connection is the likely best choice..

--vnc which has an open session on the host for access, is a bit of a problem for administration..

Although hardware is a huge limiting factor, linux should allow you to have over 4 billion simultaneous user connections. Good enough? :P
