My guess is you are using the KDE network manager? I use the gnome network manager because I found the KDE network manager wouldn't connect to some networks for me. You could give this a try. You will need to uninstall the KDE network manager or it will interfere with the gnome network manager. You will also need to set "nm-applet" to autostart upon login.

Not sure how new you are to all this. I'll assume nothing:
1) open synaptic package manager
2) Install network-manager-gnome
3) find "network-manager-KDE", unistall it
4) unistall "knm-runtime" if it is installed also.
5) Close synaptic
6) Go to autostart configuration (just type autostart in the KDE menu)
7) click on add program
8) A choose application window should pop up, just type in "nm-applet", then click ok.
9) restart the system and the gnome network manager should load in the system tray when you log in
10) Click on the gnome network manager icon in the system tray and set up your network (let me know if you need any help with this. I think you should be able to figure it out.)

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

well i thoughti had it all working. i was wrong. i tried using the gnome internet manager but when i finally got the chance to try the wireless connection that was giving me trouble i found i was still having issues. is this a driver issue or a kernel issue coming from improper hardware support? i VERY new to linux so idk.
