No, Kmix is running just fine. It's the on-screen-display that pops up when you raise, lower, or mute the volume with the buttons on my laptop that have disappeared. After a clean/unupgraded install of the beta the on-screen-display pops up just like it's supposed to. After upgrading the suggested packages, however, it stops working.

Hi Boo,
I'm new to LinuxMint (not to linux but to linux desktop) and I have few questions related to KDE Mint:
- you said that the beta 044 installers will not need to reinstall but how do you push the changes to environment? Do you use new deb packages or the desktop tweaks are lost and only bug fixes are installed?
- I was using on Sony Vaio S2HP the live cd of beta 044 and found that even after using throttling to reduce it to 25% the fan is still loud. Will it work only once installed or will not work on this beta version or version of mint ?
- found that CTRL+F1 and CTRL+F2 are working to move between Virtual Desks but on the the taskbar do not find the buttons to click to switch between them?
- also the beta was 1GB but the final will be 700MB. What packages will be removed to save the 300MB?

Thank you very much and I will appreciate if any of you that know the answer will help me understand how linux desktop is supposed to work!

the changes from beta 44 are minor, and really only a few config file modifications/additions.
I am not producing an upgrade deb to the final, but there will be notes on the config file additions.

your fan problem is kernel/module related and out of our control/scope to fix.

you can add the virtual desktop applet to the taskbar yourself. I enable compiz and use my mouse wheel or touch pad to switch desktops.

The final will be a 1GB DVD but there will be a mini version that will be a CD. the release notes will mention what was removed to fit it on a CD. eg OOo, gimp, hugin, inkscape, wallpapers, doco, icon themes... anything big.

Hi Boo,
I tried and done a test install of Kubuntu 7.10 on the same laptop and the cpu speed reduction worked perfectly so as your Linux Mint KDE CE edition is based on that version of Kubuntu (from my understanding) something was wrong with the Beta version.

I'm quite an advance linux user (not desktop) and I want to know if you can share this info on how to you build your installation disks? Do have a list of packages you install plus few file patches or you install it on a partition/virtual machine and from that you get the image? If the live image is using your kernel and not the ubuntu kernel this kind of problems can show.

I will probably wait for the final and install that if I can not get nearly the same level of tuning of media files in Kubuntu

I really like the Linux Mint idea and I hope I do not have to get the package list and apt settings as in mint and try to use Kubuntu as it is better with my laptop.

Mint KDE uses the ubuntu repositories which i expect may give us some kde problems than the kubuntu ones, eg your fan issue.
ubuntu was chosen so that mint and mint KDE use all the same repos.

we use reconstructor to build the live DVD/CDs.
you do your changes in a chroot env.
give it a go but remember it is best to use the same kernel on your system as the install disk.
