Running Mint 11 Katya W/ KDE, and want to use the Mint Menu!

As the title states, I am running mint 11 katya, and I am using KDE, I love KDE except for the crappy menu that it has. What I want to do is use the stock Mint Menu that is in Mint 11 as it is phenomenal. How do I achieve this goal? And if I can't do that, then how do I get snapping windows ie, aero snap, using Xfce since it is in Compiz, and you can't run both. Thanks, Robert

As for the first part of your post, I'm afraid you may not be able to run Mint Menu in KDE. Mint Menu is a gnome applet, and KDE uses plasma widgets. I would think that if it was possible Boo would have put the Mint Menu in Mint KDE. Lancelot Launcher that is default in Mint KDE is quite similar in appearance to Mint Menu.

IMHO, the Mint menu would be possible with python stuff, but as Mr. Tdockery97 mentioned, it's on Mint Dev Crew ~ Boo who could set it.

I sympathise about MintMenu. I have used lots of distros over the years and for me it is the best of it's kind I have come across. It would be great to have it as a signature feature in all Mint editions - but so far as I know the excellent KDE Edition is the work of just one man. Perhaps he needs more community support if this is to be achieved?

I was about to ask if this is possible (KDE on top of Katya) without losing the optimization (codecs, samba,...) specific to this wonderful Mint distro.
Also, how is this done? Using the pkg manager I don't see ONE option to install the KDE desktop, rather tons of KDE pkgs and programs.

Thank you much.

I just turned my Mint 11 Katya Gnome into KDE today. You need to install kde-standard with Package Manager. Then it's just a matter of tweaking it and setting it up the way you want. I removed nautilus, which removes gnome-session and a lot of other gnome stuff. So far it's working great. Here's a screenshot. You can see the inxi -S printout in Konsole showing it's KDE 4.6.2 on Mint 11 Katya:

What I ended up doing is installing the regular mint 11, disabled the gnome panels, and set up AWN to be my taskbar, and they have an applet to use the mint menu and it looks a TON better than any other panel.

Thanks for the reply re KDE.
Also, I never heard of AWN. Might be worth a try.
Thanks

tdockery:

If you really wanted to go with a full kde environment, install the kde-full package then take out (uninstall) gdm3 or gdm whichever one you have and also take out (uninstall) the gdm session bin, then you'll have a full kde desktop....that's my take in that...if it helps

Cheers

Do I need to add another repos? I tried kde-standard, and it couldn't fulfill most of the required dependencies.
I tried to enable backport repos to no avail.

Tnx

Hey nat;

Try adding these two ppa's to your repository list through terminal commands "sudo" add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa
add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports....without the quotaion marks...let me know if it helps.

Cheers
Andrew

Thanks Andrew!

The first one did the trick. I didn't need to add the backports.

Where can I download the Mint11 Katya W/KDE version? I did not find the KDE version on your website, only the version 10.
Thanks for your responses.

You can add KDE yourself to the Gnome version, but you'll get a strange KDE/Gnome mix in your menu. The Mint 11 KDE version is still in development.

I just took Mint 11 LXDE , installed the kde-full package on it to avoid any KDE/Gnome mixups, tweaked the menus and icons a little and ended up with this:

Works nice and I noticed that it takes much less system ressources than any Gnome 2 based system I have ever used in the past couple of years.

a lot of us that want to use KDE with current-generation mint(katya) are running generic KDE right now. takes about an hour to install with your software manager, or you can go the sudo apt-get route but it's the same time-frame.

it's nice. snappy, very responsive and *really* full featured. the menu is a little obtuse compared to katya-gnome, but it's hardly an abomination, just laid out a lot differently.

i'm really liking the plasma shell, so it'll be interesting to see the direction the KDE edition rolls towards. i admit the idea of going debian is interesting(though i'm not so hot on having to do a full backup and reinstall of some of the bigger stuff on my machine, but whatcha gonna do?

Hello

Thanks for the two responses.

I decided to stay with Kubuntu and evaluate Mint in a year again. I am actually not looking for a program which I have to tweek or use the console to much. So, I might come back to Mint.
